Chapter 4 - The Digital Web of CorruptionMarcus flipped open the encrypted tablet, projecting the glowing screen onto the wall beside Chloe’s hospital bed. Rows of encrypted financial ledgers, scanned wire transfer receipts, and digital photographs filled the display.

“Your stepfather isn't just a domestic abuser,” Marcus stated, tapping the screen to highlight a complex web of shell corporations. “For the last eight years, Jonah Vance has operated as the primary financial launderer for a human trafficking and illegal contraband ring stretching from the southern border all the way up through the tri-state area. He uses local real estate developments as front companies to clean cartel money.”
Chloe gasped, clutching her blanket tighter. “My God... that’s why there were always strange men in suits coming to the estate late at night. Mom said they were business partners.”
“They were monsters,” I muttered, staring at the screen as my eyes scanned the names listed on the payroll ledgers.
There were local politicians, crooked real estate developers, and—most disturbingly—half the command staff of the county sheriff’s department, including Sheriff Miller himself. Each of them was receiving monthly kickbacks funneled through dummy accounts to look the other way on missing persons reports, property seizures, and suspicious deaths.
Marcus swiped to a new folder labeled TARGET DOSSIERS.
A list of mugshots, home addresses, and personal vehicle license plate numbers flashed across the wall. At the very top of the priority list was a familiar photograph.
My own face.
My home address in the capital. My patrol vehicle's registration. My daily commute routes.
“He was tracking you, Maya,” Marcus said quietly. “Long before you drove down here tonight, Jonah knew who you were. He knew you were an SBI investigator closing in on his syndicate fronts. Hurting Chloe wasn't just a random domestic explosion of temper... it was a message. A trap designed to draw you out into his jurisdiction where his local cronies could neutralize you under the guise of a tragic 'traffic accident' or 'home invasion response'.”
A chilling silence fell over the hospital room.
The pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity. Jonah hadn't expected me to arrive with state police backup, federal clearance, and a tactical mindset. He had expected a grieving, desperate sister walking blindly into a den of wolves.
“Well,” I said, a dark, dangerous resolve settling deep into my bones as I cracked my knuckles. “The wolf just walked into the trap wearing state gold. Let’s see how he likes being hunted.”

“What’s your play?” Marcus asked, eyeing me closely. “If we raid the estate right now without federal arrest warrants signed by a district judge outside this county, Jonah’s legal team will claim unlawful search and seize, and his judicial buddies will spring him in two hours.”
“We aren't raiding him,” I replied, a cold smile touching the corners of my lips. “We’re going to let him come to us.”
