Chapter 2 - The Weight of the Badge“You have no jurisdiction here, Detective,” County Sheriff Miller barked, slamming his hand down on the precinct intake desk. The fluorescent lights overhead flickered in rhythm with the driving rain outside. “This is a local family dispute in a private residence. We handle county matters.”

I didn't blink. I stood tall across the counter, my face a mask of cold, professional granite. I reached slowly into my coat pocket and slid my gold shield across the scarred wooden surface, letting it spin to a halt directly in front of him.

Sheriff Miller’s eyes dropped to the badge. The color slowly drained from his ruddy cheeks.

State Bureau of Investigation – Senior Special Agent.

“Jurisdiction?” I asked, my voice dangerously low, dropping the temperature in the room by ten degrees. “Sheriff, your deputies were called to an active felony assault resulting in severe bodily harm to a disabled citizen. Instead of securing the crime scene, your boys filed a routine ‘accidental fall’ report at the behest of my stepfather. That makes your department either profoundly incompetent or active accessories to a felony cover-up. Which is it?”

Miller swallowed hard, his hand hovering nervously over the badge. He knew my name. Everyone in state law enforcement knew what happened when my unit caught wind of local corruption.

“Jonah Vance is a prominent local businessman,” Miller stammered defensively, trying to regain his footing. “He contributes heavily to the county commissioner’s reelection fund. We can’t just kick doors in because a hysterical girl—Agent, look, we’re just trying to keep the peace—”

“You aren't keeping peace. You're keeping secrets,” I interrupted, pulling out the sealed evidence bag containing the gold emerald-encrusted signet ring and sliding it across the desk. “Recognize that?”

The sheriff stared at the ring. His breath hitched. The blood drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a man staring straight into an open grave.

“Where... where did you get this?” Miller whispered, his eyes darting anxiously toward the closed blinds of the precinct office.

“Under the dining room table at my mother’s estate, right beside my battered sister,” I said, leaning in close across the desk. “My tech team ran a preliminary trace on the inner band engraving before I walked through your doors. It’s registered to a holding corporation tied directly to Jonah Vance—and to an unsolved 2018 missing person case involving a young woman who vanished from this exact county under 'mysterious circumstances'.”

Miller gripped the edges of the desk, his knuckles turning white. “Agent Vance... you don't understand what kind of machine you're sticking your fingers into. Jonah isn't just an abusive stepdad. He runs the regional syndicate operations that fund half the real estate development in this valley. If you push this, the local judges, the D.A.’s office, half my deputies... we’re all tied into his paper trail.”

“Then I suggest you start writing statements, Sheriff,” I replied, unholstering my notepad and clicking my pen with a sharp, metallic snap. “Because by sunrise, every single lie my family told tonight is going to detonate right in their faces.”
