Chapter 2 - The Mask SlipsI didn't rush. I didn't walk with the hurried, desperate energy of a woman seeking revenge. I walked with the unbothered, absolute grace of an empress taking possession of a conquered province.

My platinum silk gown shimmered under the crystal chandeliers, catching the light with every step. The diamond earrings from Sicily flashed against my neck, heavy and cold, reminding everyone in the room of a lineage far older, darker, and more powerful than anything Wall Street could manufacture.

When Ryan finally registered that it was me—Isabella, the quiet, obedient wife he believed was sitting at home in our penthouse weeping over his betrayal—his knees actually buckled. He took an involuntary half-step backward, nearly tripping over the hem of Vanessa’s crimson gown.

"I-Isabella?" Ryan stammered, his voice cracking like cheap glass. "What... what are you doing here? How did you..."

He looked around wildly, as if expecting security to magically appear and escort me out. But the security detail hired for the evening—men who usually jumped at Ryan’s command—stood rigidly against the mahogany walls, their eyes fixed respectfully on the floor the moment my father walked past them. They knew who paid the real security bills in this city.

"Good evening, Ryan," I said, my voice cutting through the dead silence of the ballroom like a scalpel. It carried effortlessly to every corner of the room. "You look surprised to see me. Didn't you tell Vanessa I was practically invisible these days?"

Vanessa stiffened, her face flushing crimson as the surrounding crowd absorbed the words. She looked up at Ryan with sudden panic. "Ryan... what is she talking about?"

Ryan ignored her. His eyes were wide, darting frantically between my face, Luca DeSantis, and my father. A terrifying realization was finally beginning to penetrate his alcohol-soaked, ego-driven brain.

"Isabella," Ryan managed to choke out, taking a clumsy step forward, his hands trembling as he reached out toward me. "Please... let's not make a scene. Whatever you think is going on, it’s not what it looks like. Let's go home and talk about this like adults—"

"Home, Ryan?" I tilted my head, offering him a sweet, merciless smile. "Which home? The penthouse that was foreclosed on by the DeSantis Trust yesterday afternoon? Or the corporate office where your accounts were frozen twelve hours ago?"

Ryan stopped dead in his tracks. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a corpse. "Frozen? What are you talking about? Caldwell Financial is closing a fifty-million-dollar merger tomorrow morning! The investors—"

"The investors pulled out twenty minutes ago," a cool, baritone voice interrupted.

Luca DeSantis stepped forward, sliding his hands smoothly into his tailored pockets. He didn't raise his voice, but every single person within thirty feet leaned in to catch his words. "Turns out, Mr. Caldwell, nobody wants to partner with a man whose corporate assets are currently under federal criminal investigation for wire fraud and embezzlement. A routine audit, you see. Though I suppose you were too busy planning galas to notice the subpoenas piling up on your desk."
