Chapter 7 - A New Horizon

Six months after the disastrous wedding that never was, the crisp morning air of Guadalajara carried the unmistakable scent of roasted coffee beans and blooming jacaranda trees.
Renata stood on the spacious balcony of her new penthouse loft, holding a steaming mug of dark roast coffee. Below her, the city buzzed with morning traffic, vibrant and alive. The dark chapters of manipulation, fake contracts, and flying ceramic shards felt like something out of a badly written fictional drama—distant, unreal, and entirely powerless over her present reality.
Her phone chimed on the patio table.
It was a notification from the State Attorney General’s office. The formal sentencing hearing for Ofelia Salgado and Licenciado Morales had concluded. Ofelia had been handed a definitive eight-year federal prison sentence for financial extortion, racketeering, and systematic document fraud, with zero possibility of early parole. Her brother Roberto’s import-export ring had been permanently dismantled, and their remaining illicit assets were fully liquidated to establish the victim restitution fund.
Mauricio had attempted to cut a plea deal blaming his mother entirely for the conspiracy, but federal prosecutors rejected his petition, recognizing his active participation in multiple historical scam cycles. He was currently awaiting trial behind bars, stripped of his designer suits, his inherited arrogance, and his access to easy money.
Renata locked her phone and set it down on the glass table.
She turned around, leaning her back against the wrought-iron balcony railing, and looked into her bright, beautifully organized living room. There were no boots kicking tables. There were no hidden cameras or toxic ultimatums dictating her worth. Every single square foot of this space belonged to her—earned through hard work, athletic discipline, and an unshakeable refusal to let anyone break her spirit.
The front door chimed softly—a polite, gentle chime from the visitor intercom downstairs.
Renata walked over to the wall monitor and pressed the talk button.
"Delivery for Renata Vance," a cheerful courier’s voice crackled through the speaker. "Package from the municipal sports federation."
"Leave it by the lobby desk, thank you," Renata replied with a smile.
She didn't need packages brought to her door to feel secure. She didn't need anyone's validation, anyone’s financial permission, or anyone’s definition of what a "proper wife" should look like.
Stepping back inside, she picked up her keys, grabbed her gym bag, and locked the front door behind her with a crisp, satisfying click.

As she walked down the sunlit hallway toward the elevator, the heavy steel doors opened smoothly, revealing a clear path downward. Renata stepped inside, pressed the ground-floor button, and watched the digital floor numbers count down in steady, predictable rhythm.
She was completely free. And the horizon ahead of her was wide, bright, and entirely her own.
