Chapter 4 - The Investigation Deepens
The police precinct downtown smelled of floor wax, stale coffee, and bureaucratic despair.
Sitting across the metal interrogation table from Renata was Commander Luis Garza, a veteran investigator with sharp eyes and a weary demeanor. He tapped a thick manila dossier that was twice the size of the one Ofelia had brought to the apartment.
"We’ve been tracking Licenciado Morales for six months," Commander Garza said, sliding a printed bank statement across the table. "He acts as a legal front for a predatory loan sharking ring operating out of Zapopan, run by a man named Roberto Salgado—Ofelia’s brother. They target independent, financially stable women, orchestrate forced marriages through manipulated civil registries, and systematically strip them of their assets using forged power-of-attorney documents."
Renata glanced at the documents. "And Mauricio?"
"He's an accomplice by association, though his mother has been running his life and financial decisions since he was twenty," Garza replied, leaning back in his chair. "He’s signed off on three previous fake debt reorganizations with women who mysteriously vanished from the city after brief marriages. We believe those women were subjected to similar psychological and physical intimidation until they signed away their life savings."
A cold shudder ran down Renata’s spine. For nine months, she had believed she was sharing her life with a warm, ambitious, slightly quirky man who loved cooking late-night dinners and talking about opening a small community center. In reality, she had been targeted by a professional matrimonial scam syndicate that used charm as bait and domestic terror as a closing argument.
"What happens to the marriage paperwork we filed three days ago?" Renata asked.
Commander Garza offered a grim, reassuring smile. "Because the civil registry documents were filed using fraudulent financial disclosures and under duress—substantiated by the audio recordings you captured and the police presence during yesterday morning’s coercion attempt—the family court judge has already granted an emergency annulment. Legally, the marriage never existed."
Renata exhaled a long, steady breath, feeling a massive physical weight lift from her shoulders.

"She’ll be spending the next several years explaining her unique family budgeting philosophy to a federal judge. Thank you, Renata. Your cool head and tactical discipline didn't just save your own assets—you just dismantled a syndicate that has victimized dozens of women across Guadalajara."
Renata shook his hand firmly. "I just wanted to make sure they picked the wrong target."
