Chapter 4 - The Mistress's CollapseWhile Adrian was fighting a losing war in the corporate sector, Celeste Monroe was discovering that life without financial scaffolding was a very lonely place.

That afternoon, I drove downtown in a chauffeured town car, stopping across the street from her high-end boutique in the Gold Coast district. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, I watched the absolute chaos unfolding inside.

Two bailiffs were standing by the cash register while store employees frantically packed designer handbags and silk garments into cardboard boxes. Celeste was screaming at a process server, her perfectly manicured fingernails clawing at the air, her face streaked with ruined makeup.

"You can't do this!" she shrieked, her voice muffled slightly through the double-paned glass. "Do you know who my fiancé is? Adrian Vale is a multi-millionaire! He'll sue every single one of you!"

The process server handed her a final laminated notice without expression, turned on his heel, and walked out of the shop.

I rolled down my window just an inch, letting the cool autumn wind brush my face.

Celeste turned toward the window, her frantic eyes locking onto mine sitting comfortably in the back of the black Mercedes. For a fraction of a second, recognition flashed across her face—followed by pure, unadulterated terror. She remembered the hospital room. She remembered laughing while I sat in a hospital gown, exhausted and vulnerable, believing I was entirely defenseless.

She took three stumbling steps toward the door, as if she wanted to run across the street and claw at my window. But a security guard stepped smoothly into her path, blocking her exit.

My phone chimed. It was an email notification from my legal team.

Subject: Asset Seizure Complete — Monroe Boutique & Personal Accounts.

Notes: All personal luxury assets purchased with embezzled corporate funds under Adrian's secondary accounts have been formally impounded. She has zero remaining liquidity.

I closed the email, locked my phone, and gave the driver a single word.

"Drive."

The car glided away from the curb, leaving Celeste standing on the sidewalk of her crumbling empire, watching her borrowed luxury vanish into the Chicago traffic.
