Chapter 6 - The Fall of Ethan Mercer

The silence in the grand ballroom was so absolute you could hear the ice melting in champagne flutes across the room.
Ethan’s face drained of all color, his jaw slackening as he stared at us—stared at me—walking arm-in-arm with the most feared billionaire in the United States. Sabrina, his actress girlfriend, tugged frantically at his sleeve, whispering something in panic, but Ethan was paralyzed.
Julian led me directly toward the dais, ignoring the sea of photographers whose camera shutters began to fire like machine gun rounds.
“Ethan,” I said, my voice carrying clearly across the silent hall. “How wonderful to see you looking so well. I trust your flight to Los Angeles was comfortable?”
Ethan stumbled backward a step, his eyes darting wildly between my face and Julian’s cold, impassive expression. “C-Claire? What... what is the meaning of this? How are you—where have you been?”
“Allow me to introduce myself to Mr. Mercer,” Julian cut in, his baritone voice dripping with lethal politeness. He extended a hand across the table. “Julian Vance. Though, given your recent legal filings, I suppose you could also refer to me as your new landlord.”
“Landlord?” Ethan choked out, refusing the handshake as humiliation and blind panic flooded his features. “What are you talking about? Mercer Technologies owns this building—we own the entire corporate park—!”
“Not anymore,” Julian replied smoothly, pulling a crisp, folded legal document from his breast pocket and tossing it onto the white tablecloth in front of Ethan. “Your primary creditor called in your corporate debt thirty minutes ago. Every server farm, every patent, every share of stock, and every square foot of real estate bearing the Mercer name has been acquired by Vance Holdings through a standard foreclosure proceeding.”
Ethan grabbed the paper, his hands trembling violently as his eyes scanned the legal seals. “This... this is impossible! You can’t do this! We had a valuation of three hundred million dollars!”
“Had being the operative word,” Julian said, stepping slightly closer so that his shadow fell completely over Ethan. “You made a fatal error, Mr. Mercer. You assumed that when you threw away your wife and your children, there was no one in this city willing to pick them up.”
Ethan spun around, his desperate gaze locking onto mine. Tears of sheer terror sprang to his eyes. “Claire! Claire, please! We were married for five years! You can’t let him do this to me! Tell him to stop!”
I looked down at the man who had ordered me out into a freezing rainstorm while I was carrying his children. I looked at the man who had checked his watch while ending our lives.
“When you told me to leave our home with twenty-four hours notice, Ethan,” I said softly, my voice cutting like glass, “you told me I’d land somewhere. You were right. I landed in the arms of a man who actually knows how to govern an empire.”
Before Ethan could reply, two federal marshals in plainclothes stepped out from behind the service doors, flanked by Vance security.
“Ethan Mercer?” one marshal asked, holding up an arrest warrant. “You’re being detained for federal securities fraud, corporate tax evasion, and illicit asset concealment based on an independent forensic audit submitted by Vance Holdings this morning.”
The flashbulbs blinded the room. As Ethan was handcuffed and hauled away screaming past the crystal chandeliers and white roses, the entire elite of Manhattan stood in stunned, terrified silence.

I didn't blink. I didn't look away.
I simply turned to Julian, whose arm was still securely linked with mine, and felt the final piece of my old life dissolve into dust.
