Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Empire

The administrator fled the room like a deer caught in headlights, the heavy door clicking shut behind her with a definitive latch.
I lay frozen against the pillows, my heart hammering against my ribs, staring up at the strange, terrifying savior who had just claimed me as his wife in a hospital registry.
“I don't know who you are,” I whispered, my voice shaking as I clutched the thin hospital sheet to my chest. “I can’t afford your protection. I don't have money, I don't have a home, and my husband—my ex-husband—just threw me away like trash.”
Julian walked slowly to the side of my bed. He didn't smile, but the hard, predatory edge in his eyes softened just a fraction as he looked down at the pale, exhausted wreck of a woman I had become.
“I didn't offer my protection because you could pay for it, Claire,” Julian said softly.
I flinched, my eyes widening. “You know my name?”
“I know everything that happens in Manhattan after midnight,” he replied, pulling a chrome-plated business card from his pocket and laying it gently on the metal bedside table. Across the embossed black surface, in minimalist silver lettering, were three words: VANCE HOLDINGS / CHAIRMAN.
The name hit me like a physical blow. Julian Vance. The man whispered about in financial boardrooms in the same terrified tone people used to discuss mafia bosses.
“You’re... you’re Julian Vance,” I breathed. “Why are you here? Why did you just tell that woman you were my husband?”
“Because,” Julian said, pulling up a hard plastic chair and sitting down beside my bed, resting his forearms on his knees, “Ethan Mercer is a fool who just handed me the most valuable asset in the city on a silver platter. And because I abhor waste.”
He leaned in closer, his voice dropping to a hypnotic, resonant register.
“Ethan wants to pretend you never existed. He wants to build his new life in Los Angeles on the backs of stolen capital and broken promises. But you and I are going to teach him a lesson about equity, Claire. We are going to take everything he owns.”
“I don't want his money,” I whispered fiercely, tears of humiliation and rage stinging my eyes. “I want my babies to live. I want to hold my sons.”
“Your sons are in the best NICU unit in the Western Hemisphere, under my direct medical directive,” Julian stated with absolute finality. “They will live. They will thrive. And as for Ethan... you are going to marry me, Claire.”
I stared at him, dumbfounded. “Marry you? We met ten minutes ago!”
“Legally, I already claimed you in front of hospital administration,” Julian corrected with a faint, chilling smirk. “And practically speaking, a woman in your position needs a shield, while a man in my position needs a legitimate heir to the Vance trust before the annual board review next month.”
It was a transaction. Cold, calculated, and terrifyingly pragmatic.
“And if I refuse?” I asked, my chin trembling.
Julian stood up, towering over the bed, his gray eyes locking onto mine with absolute, unyielding power.
“You can’t afford to refuse,” he said quietly. “Tomorrow morning, Ethan Mercer wakes up in California believing he has successfully disposed of his baggage. By tomorrow afternoon, he’ll discover that his corporate accounts are frozen, his holding company is in receivership, and his ex-wife is legally married to the man who owns his mortgage.”

He turned toward the door, pausing with his hand on the brass handle.
“Get some rest, Mrs. Vance,” he said without turning around. “Your new life starts tomorrow.”
