Chapter 3 - The Empty BrownstoneSunday at 7:15 PM, Austin Weaver’s luxury sedan pulled up to the curb of our Back Bay brownstone.

He climbed out of the car, carrying his leather overnight bag, whistling softly under his breath. The weekend in Newport with his junior associate, Chloe, had gone precisely as planned—or so he thought. He had managed to squeeze in a romantic getaway under the guise of an emergency legal seminar, and he was returning home expecting his submissive, adoring wife to have dinner waiting on the stove.
He unlocked the heavy front oak door and stepped into the foyer.
"Elena?" he called out, dropping his keys into the silver bowl on the console table.
No answer.
The house felt dead. There was no smell of roasted garlic, no soft jazz playing from the speakers, no light spilling from the kitchen. Just a heavy, echoing vacuum.
Frowning, Austin walked down the hallway toward the kitchen. It was immaculate, completely bare. The countertops were wiped clean; the refrigerator was empty.
Panic, cold and sharp, flickered in his chest for the first time. He bolted up the grand staircase toward our master bedroom.
He threw the bedroom door open.
The closet—which had been overflowing with my dresses, shoes, and coats just forty-eight hours earlier—was completely empty. Not a single hanger remained. The vanity was stripped bare. Even my silver hairbrush was gone.
"Elena!" Austin shouted, his voice cracking slightly as he ran back down to the ground floor.
He burst into the dining room, and there it was.
Resting in the center of the massive mahogany table was the velvet ring box, the thick legal packet, and the cream-colored note.
Austin’s hands trembled as he walked over to the table. He reached out and snatched the note. His eyes scanned my handwriting once, twice, three times.
Marcus and Clara send their regards.
The words hit him like a physical blow. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving him chalk-white in the dim overhead light. He dropped the note, tore open the legal packet, and stared at the bold, unyielding court seals.
EMERGENCY ASSET PRESERVATION AND TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER.

Defendants: Austin Weaver & Weaver Law Partners LLC.
Summary of Action: Complete freeze of all revolving credit lines, corporate partnership equity distributions, and personal liquid assets pending divorce proceedings for fraudulent marital abandonment and asset diversion.
"No," Austin whispered, shaking his head in violent denial. "No, this is insane. This isn't real."
He lunged for his cell phone, pulling it out of his pocket with shaking fingers, and dialed my number.
“The subscriber you have dialed is no longer in service or has permanently blocked incoming calls from this device.”
He tried calling his law partner, Marcus.
Marcus picked up on the first ring. Before Austin could even speak, Marcus’s voice boomed through the speaker, cold enough to freeze liquid nitrogen.
"If you ever call this house again, Austin, I will personally represent Clara in the alienation of affection lawsuit, and I will make sure you are disbarred before the end of the month. Don't ever speak to me again."

Austin dropped his phone onto the hardwood floor. The screen shattered into a spiderweb of cracks.
He stood alone in the center of the dark, echoing brownstone, realizing with absolute, crushing horror that in trying to keep his mistress and discard his wife, he had accidentally declared war on a woman who held the legal keys to his entire existence.
