Chapter 7 - Sunrise Over Palermo

Six months later, the Mediterranean sun rose over the rolling hills of Palermo, casting a brilliant golden light across the stone terraces of the Santoro estate. The bullet holes from that stormy night had long since been repaired, the gardens replanted with vibrant white jasmine and blooming bougainvillea, and the dark cloud of fear that once choked the palazzo had been permanently replaced by peace.

I stood on the master balcony, wearing a simple linen sundress, holding a cup of fresh espresso as the morning breeze carried the scent of the sea.

Strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind, pulling me backward against a warm, solid chest. Niko rested his chin on my shoulder, inhaling deeply as he pressed a gentle kiss to my neck.

"You're up early," he murmured, his voice rich with morning sleep.

"I have a board meeting at the foundation in an hour," I smiled, leaning back against him.

Since taking over the restructuring of the Santoro shipping lines, Niko had quietly transitioned the syndicate away from arms and drugs entirely into legitimate global logistics and renewable energy infrastructure—a transformation that made him the most powerful, respected industrialist in southern Italy. And by his side, running the philanthropic and financial oversight committees, was his fiercely independent wife.

Niko turned me around in his arms, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that still made my breath catch, even after half a year of marriage.

"You know," Niko said, a teasing smirk playing at the corners of his lips, "when I married a reckless, spoiled socialite, I expected a lot of headaches. I didn't expect her to take over my empire and become the most dangerous woman in Sicily."

I laughed, wrapping my arms around his neck and playing with the lapels of his linen shirt. "You should have checked your sources better, Mr. Santoro. You always did rely too much on rumors."

Niko pulled me flush against his body, his gaze turning deeply tender. He captured my lips in a slow, breathtaking kiss that swept away all the remaining shadows of the past.

"I don't care about rumors anymore," he whispered against my mouth, his hands resting securely on my hips. "I only care about the truth. And the truth is, marrying you was the only smart thing I ever did."

As the golden sunlight flooded the terrace, wrapping us in warmth and infinite possibility, I knew the story we had started in fear and deceit had finally found its true beginning.
