Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Palermo Night

The rain began around midnight, lashing against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master suite with the fury of a Mediterranean squall. I couldn't sleep. The screen of my laptop glowed softly in the darkened room, casting eerie blue shadows across the walls as I continued tracing the digital breadcrumbs Donato had left behind.
A sharp, distinct click echoed from the heavy double doors leading to the hallway.
I froze, my hand hovering over the keyboard.
The door slowly swung open. Niko slipped into the room like a ghost, clad in a black tactical shirt and dark cargo trousers, holding a silenced Beretta automatic in his right hand. Water dripped from his dark hair, clinging to his forehead. He looked lethal, battle-hardened, and entirely wired on adrenaline.
"Pack a bag," he ordered in a sharp whisper, crossing the room in three long strides.
"What?" I stood up, my chair scraping softly against the floor. "Niko, what's happening?"
"Someone tipped off Donato that our security protocols were breached this afternoon," he said, his eyes scanning the corridor outside our open door before locking onto mine with fierce urgency. "An assassination squad is currently breaching the perimeter gates on the north side of the estate. We have less than three minutes before they reach this wing."
Panic flared in my chest, hot and sharp, but I forced it down. "Your own uncle is trying to assassinate you?"
"My uncle has been trying to kill me for five years; he's just impatient tonight," Niko muttered darkly, grabbing a heavy leather duffel bag from the closet and tossing it onto the bed. He began dumping clothes, my encrypted hard drives, and a spare Glock pistol into the bag with ruthless efficiency. "Move, Caterina. Now."
"I'm not leaving my research behind," I snapped, sweeping my flash drives off the desk and shoving them into my coat pocket.
Before Niko could argue, a deafening explosion rattled the palazzo’s foundations. The lights flickered once, twice, and then plunged the entire suite into absolute darkness, save for the flickering emergency battery strips along the baseboards.
Alarms began to wail through the mansion—a shrill, high-pitched screech that signaled a full-scale security breach.
Niko grabbed my wrist, his grip iron-tight, and yanked me toward the far corner of the bedroom behind a massive antique armoire. He pressed a hidden panel in the wood molding with his thumb, and a narrow, dark vertical door popped open, revealing a steep stone staircase plunging down into the bowels of the estate.
"The panic tunnel," Niko said, pushing me gently inside ahead of him. "It leads down to the cliffside boathouse on the coast. Stay behind me."
We descended into the damp, subterranean chill of the escape tunnel, the sounds of shouting voices, shattering glass, and muffled gunfire echoing from the rooms above us. Every step felt like a march through a nightmare. The woman who had walked down the aisle in a pristine white dress forty-eight hours ago felt like a distant stranger. Here, in the dark, damp stone tunnels beneath Sicily, I wasn't an heiress or a trophy wife. I was a target.
And Niko Santoro was the only thing standing between me and execution.
Halfway down the tunnel, a loud crash echoed from above us, followed by the rapid-fire pop of a submachine gun. A shower of plaster and dust rained down from the ceiling of the stairwell, stinging our eyes.
"Down!" Niko roared, shoving me flat against the damp stone wall.
He threw himself over my body, using his own broad shoulders and back as a human shield just as heavy boots thudded loudly on the floor directly above our hidden exit grate. My face was pressed against the rough fabric of his tactical shirt; I could hear the frantic, steady thumping of his heart against my ear, smelling gunpowder, rain, and pure, raw adrenaline.
"Niko..." I whispered against his chest.
"Quiet," he breathed, his lips brushing my hair, his arm wrapping tighter around my waist to keep me pinned safely beneath him.

For thirty agonizing seconds, the footsteps above lingered, searching for the hidden latch. Then, shouts echoed from another section of the estate, and the boots rushed away.
Niko slowly lifted his head, his dark eyes searching mine in the pitch-black corridor. The danger surrounding us was palpable, deadly, and entirely real. Yet, as his hand gently cupped the back of my neck, pulling me closer in the suffocating dark, the fear evaporated, replaced by a sudden, intense heat that had nothing to do with survival.
