Chapter 5 - The Fall of the RussosBefore I could answer, three black Maybachs screeched to a halt at both ends of the alleyway, blocking all exits.

Stepping out from the lead vehicle, flanked by ten heavily armed operators, was Silvio, alongside Federal Prosecutor Aris Vance from the United States District Court in Chicago.
"Don Alessandro," Silvio announced cleanly, stepping into the alleyway holding a sealed federal injunction folder. "The Russo syndicate headquarters in New York was raided by federal marshals thirty minutes ago. Valentina Russo and her father have been placed under arrest for attempted assassination, racketeering, and corporate wire fraud."
Alessandro stood up fluidly from the wet pavement, his six-foot-two frame rising with a sudden, terrifying swiftness that made the surrounding guards bow their heads in respect.
The weeping, heartbroken husband vanished for a fraction of a second, replaced by the sovereign Don of Chicago whose storm-gray eyes held an absolute, freezing authority.
"Are the Russo accounts frozen, Silvio?" Alessandro demanded flatly.
"Completely, Don Alessandro," Silvio confirmed. "Valentina’s family is finished on the East Coast. They will spend the rest of their lives in a federal maximum-security penitentiary."
Alessandro turned back toward me, stepping closer until his broad frame completely shielded the twins and me from the rainy wind blowing down the alley.
He didn't reach out to grab me. He stood before me with his hands folded behind his back, his posture humble, his eyes holding zero pride.
"I built an empire, Elena," Alessandro whispered softly, his baritone thick with deep emotion. "And I let it turn me into a monster who broke the only woman who ever truly loved me."
He reached into his inner suit pocket, pulling out a small velvet box, opening it flat before me under the rain.

Inside sat my original platinum wedding band—the ring I had left on his desk twelve months ago—now reset beside a flawless ten-carat emerald-cut diamond that caught the streetlights in brilliant, sparkling waves.
"I don't ask you to forgive me today, Elena," Alessandro promised, his storm-gray eyes holding mine with an unbroken, eternal covenant. "I don't ask you to move back to the mansion tomorrow. But starting today... I am spending every dollar I own, every breath I have, and every day of my life earning the right to be your husband and their father again."
