Chapter 6 - The UnravelingTwo weeks later, the once-proud Park Atlantic empire was dismantled piece by piece. The family estate in Boston was put up for collateral liquidation, the luxury cars were repossessed, and Lila’s social media accounts—previously flooded with pictures of designer bags and champagne toasts—went entirely dark as she and Nathan retreated to a small, rented apartment in downtown Boston, facing lawsuits from angry investors.

Ava Whitman didn't watch their downfall. She didn't need to.
Her new heritage line with Han Global launched to record-breaking sales across North America and Asia. Whitman & Vale promoted her to Executive Vice President of Global Acquisitions, and her mother—after a very awkward phone call where she attempted to excuse Lila and Nathan’s betrayal as "youthful foolishness"—was quietly cut off from Ava’s personal life entirely. Ava had learned that family was earned through loyalty, not shared blood.
On a rainy Thursday evening in Manhattan, Ava sat in Kian Han’s penthouse office overlooking Central Park. The storm lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, but inside, the room was warm, filled with the scent of cedarwood and espresso.
Kian walked over, setting a crystal glass of bourbon on the mahogany table in front of her before sitting down on the sofa beside her, his arm resting casually along the back of the cushions.
"Park Atlantic's remaining real estate assets were sold at auction this afternoon," Kian said softly, his dark eyes watching her closely. "Your father's old firm bought the Boston docks at a fraction of their value."
Ava took a slow sip of her drink, feeling the warmth spread through her chest. She turned her head to look at him, her heart beating a little faster than normal—not out of fear, but out of a deep, dizzying certainty.
"You didn't have to destroy them completely, Kian," she murmured, though there was no reproach in her voice.
"I didn't destroy them," Kian corrected, leaning in closer, his voice dropping into that rich, gravelly cadence that always made her breath catch. "They built a house out of straw, and I simply opened the window to let the wind in. You are the one who engineered the blueprints, Ava."
He reached out, his fingers gently tracing her jawline, lifting her chin so she had no choice but to meet his piercing gaze.
"I told you on our first meeting," Kian whispered. "I don't do business dates. And I certainly don't let go of things that are mine."

Ava’s lips curved into a slow, genuine smile. She reached up, her hand resting flat against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beneath his shirt. "And what makes you think I'm yours to keep, Mr. Han?"
Kian’s smile turned devastatingly handsome as he pulled her flush against him, their lips inches apart. "Because you didn't just break the man who betrayed you, Ava. You built a kingdom on top of his ruins. And there is only one king sitting beside you."
