Chapter 6 - The Confrontation at the GalleryThe grand annual autumn gala hosted by the Vale family was the social event of the Manhattan calendar. Held inside the sprawling, marble-columned halls of the Met Cloisters, it was a glittering gathering of billionaires, politicians, and high-society elites clad in designer tuxedos and evening gowns.

Sebastian stood near the tall arched windows overlooking the Hudson River, wearing a bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, holding a glass of scotch he had barely touched.

He had attended solely to execute the final legal filing that would strip his grandfather of his remaining voting shares in Vale Global. The papers were in his breast pocket, signed, notarized, and ready for delivery.

Suddenly, the ambient chatter of the ballroom died down.

Heads turned toward the grand double doors at the entrance.

Arthur Vale entered, leaning heavily on his silver-headed cane, flanked by two armed security guards and District Attorney Robert Vance. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through dry grass.

Sebastian’s jaw tightened. He set his glass down on a passing waiter’s tray and strode across the marble floor straight toward his grandfather.

“Grandfather,” Sebastian greeted coldly, stopping a few feet away. “You shouldn't have come. Especially not with a disgraced prosecutor on your arm.”

Arthur stopped, looking up at Sebastian with eyes full of icy superiority.

“Did you really think you could overthrow fifty years of empire with a few stroke-of-pen corporate filings, Sebastian?” Arthur asked, his voice carrying clearly across the silent hall. “You think you are the first Vale to think with his heart instead of his head?”

District Attorney Vance stepped forward, pulling a folded legal document from his breast pocket.

“Sebastian Vale,” the D.A. announced loudly enough for half the room to hear. “You are hereby served with a federal grand jury subpoena and a family court injunction regarding the emergency custody and welfare of three minor children, filed on behalf of the Vale patriarch.”

The ballroom erupted into a storm of gasps and whispers.

Sebastian didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He simply looked at the D.A., then down at his grandfather, with a smile so terrifyingly calm that Arthur actually took a step back.

“You think a family court injunction is going to separate me from my children?” Sebastian asked smoothly.

“It will freeze your assets, restrict your travel, and place those children under court-appointed state supervision until a full psychological and financial evaluation of their mother can be completed,” Arthur sneered. “You will never see them again, Sebastian. Not as long as I draw breath.”

“That,” a cool, clear voice echoed from the grand entrance, “will be quite difficult, Mr. Vale. Seeing as your breath is running rather short.”

Every head in the ballroom snapped toward the entrance doors.

Maya Vance walked into the grand hall.

She wasn't wearing a t-worn sweater or running sneakers. She wore a breathtaking, floor-length emerald-green silk gown that caught the chandelier light like liquid jade, her dark hair swept up in an elegant chignon, her chin held high with the absolute, unshakeable grace of a queen.

Beside her, holding her hand, walked Sebastian’s mother—Eleanor Vale—who had mysteriously vanished from high society over a decade ago after crossing paths with the patriarch.

Arthur’s face turned the color of ash.

“Eleanor...” Arthur breathed, clutching his cane so hard his knuckles turned white.

Eleanor Vale stepped forward, her eyes flashing with decades of suppressed rage.

“Hello, Father,” Eleanor said coldly, her voice ringing clear across the silent hall. “Did you really think I wouldn't return the moment I heard you were trying to steal my grandchildren the exact same way you tried to ruin my life?”

Sebastian crossed the floor in three long strides, stopping beside Maya, taking her free hand in his and lacing his fingers securely through hers.

“Grandfather,” Sebastian said, pulling the documents from his breast pocket and tossing them at Arthur’s feet. “Meet the new majority shareholder of Vale Global, and the primary legal guardian of my children. My mother signed the corporate restructuring papers this afternoon.”

Arthur stared at the papers lying on the marble floor, swaying slightly on his feet as his empire slipped through his trembling fingers forever.

District Attorney Vance looked between Arthur and Sebastian, quietly took a step backward, and slipped out the side exit without saying another word.

The war was over. The house built on lies had finally crumbled to dust.
