Chapter 4 - The Shattered EmpireThe silence that fell over the eighty-story penthouse boardroom was so absolute you could hear the soft hum of the air conditioning unit.

Marissa let out a sharp, hysterical shriek. "THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE! THAT’S A LIE! She’s a lying, gold-digging nobody! Reid, do something! Tell them she’s lying!"
"Shut up, Marissa!" Reid roared, turning on his wife with a ferocity that made her stagger backward in shock.
Reid turned back to me, his hands trembling violently, his breathing shallow and rapid. He looked like a man who had watched his entire universe collapse in a single second.
"Claire..." Reid choked out, stepping around the massive mahogany table, reaching a hand out toward Julian. "Claire, please... is this... is he really my son?"
I stepped back instantly, my eyes burning with a cold, impenetrable wall of ice. "He is my son, Reid. You made sure of that when you told the world I was just a 'warm-up' while you smiled for photographers outside the courthouse."
"I didn't know!" Reid cried out, his voice cracking with raw, pathetic desperation. "Claire, I swear to God I didn't know you were pregnant! If I had known—"
"If you had known, you would have treated my pregnancy like a corporate asset," I interrupted coldly, staring directly into his panicked eyes. "You would have forced me into confidentiality agreements, dragged me through corporate clinics, and used my child as a bargaining chip for your merger. You didn't want a family, Reid. You wanted a trophy. And now you have one sitting in the gallery."
Reid glanced back at Marissa, who was standing frozen in shock, her face pale, her high-fashion elegance replaced by the bitter, terrified expression of a woman who realized her gold-plated future had just evaporated.
"Mr. Ashford," Attorney Harrison Vance spoke up smoothly, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from his briefcase and laying them on the boardroom table. "As of eight o'clock this morning, the board of directors has executed the emergency trust transition. Claire Miller holds fifty-one percent of the voting shares. Effective immediately, your executive privileges as CEO are suspended pending a full financial audit of the Blake International merger."
"Suspended?!" Reid shouted, grabbing the papers and ripping through them with frantic, shaking hands. "You can't suspend me! I built this expansion! I am the CEO of Ashford Global!"
"You were the CEO, Reid," Arthur said flatly, walking past his grandson without giving him a second glance. "Now you are merely a minority shareholder who serves at the pleasure of the trust's majority manager."
Arthur turned to look at me, dipping his head in a gesture of profound, solemn respect.
"The executive suite on the seventy-ninth floor has been prepared for you, Claire," Arthur said softly. "The board is waiting for your instructions regarding the Blake merger."
I looked down at Reid, who had collapsed back into his executive chair, his head buried in his hands, his body shaking with quiet, pathetic sobs. Beside him, Marissa was frantically pulling out her phone, dialing her publicist, trying desperately to manage the catastrophic media fallout that was already brewing outside the building.
I held Julian close against my chest, feeling his warm, steady heartbeat against mine.
Nine months ago, I had walked away from this man with nothing but tears in my eyes and a shattered heart. Today, I stood above his ruined empire, holding the future he had thrown away.
"Cancel the Blake International merger, Harrison," I ordered smoothly, my voice ringing clear across the boardroom. "And initiate a complete forensic audit of Reid Ashford’s personal expenditure accounts for the past six months. If there are any irregularities... fire him."

"Right away, Ma'am," Harrison bowed.
I turned on my heel, my navy blue coat swirling around my legs, and walked out of the boardroom without looking back once.
