Chapter 3 - The Boardroom ExecutionThe winter sun shone bright and brittle over Manhattan, reflecting off the towering glass facade of the Ashford Global Headquarters on Park Avenue.

Inside the grand penthouse boardroom on the eightieth floor, thirty of the world's most powerful investment executives, board members, and legal advisors sat around a massive oval table crafted from polished African mahogany.
At the head of the table sat Reid Ashford.
He looked every bit the master of the universe. His hair was impeccably groomed, his black suit tailored to perfection, and his expression radiated absolute, supreme confidence. Sitting directly behind him in the guest seating gallery was Marissa, wearing an ivory Alexander McQueen dress, tapping her French-manicured nails against her designer clutch, looking thoroughly bored by the corporate proceedings.
"As you can see from page fourteen of the Q3 projections," Reid said, his smooth, persuasive voice filling the boardroom as he clicked a slide presentation on the giant screen, "the acquisition of Blake International Realty gives us total dominance over the eastern logistics corridor. We are preparing to close the final funding round next Friday."
Reid smiled, leaning his forearms on the mahogany table.
"In three weeks, I turn thirty-five," Reid continued casually. "The final trust shares will vest, consolidating my voting control to sixty-five percent. Ashford Global will officially enter a new era of unprecedented expansion."
A quiet, confident murmur swept through the board members. Several of Reid’s loyal allies nodded in approval. Marissa smiled smugly from the gallery, adjusting her diamond necklace for the camera recording the internal proceedings.
Suddenly, the heavy oak double doors at the back of the boardroom swung open with a dramatic, booming echo.
The chatter died instantly.
Walking into the room, flanked by six senior corporate attorneys in black suits, was Arthur Ashford.
Reid’s smile faltered slightly, though he quickly masked it with an expression of respectful deference. He stood up from his leather chair.
"Grandfather," Reid said, spreading his hands in a welcoming gesture. "We weren't expecting you at the Q3 operational review. Please, take a seat at the head of the table."
Arthur didn't smile. He didn't acknowledge Reid’s greeting. He walked slowly down the center aisle of the boardroom, his gold-headed cane clicking rhythmically against the marble floor.
He stopped five feet from Reid.
"This meeting is adjourned," Arthur announced, his deep voice carrying an authority that instantly silenced the entire eighty-story tower.
Reid blinked, his brows furrowing in confusion. "Grandfather, what are you talking about? We are in the middle of reviewing the international debt structuring for the Blake merger—"
"There will be no Blake merger," Arthur stated flatly.
Marissa gasped softly from the gallery, her back straightening instantly.
Reid’s face flushed red with sudden anger, though he kept his voice controlled. "Grandfather, you are being unreasonable. The board has already given preliminary approval. The trust charter explicitly gives me operational command—"
"The trust charter gives you operational command only if you fulfill the bloodline succession clause prior to your thirty-fifth birthday," Arthur interrupted coldly. "You have failed to fulfill that clause. You have presented this board with no legitimate male heir. Under Section 12-B of the Ashford Trust, thirty percent of your executive voting stock is hereby frozen pending board review."
Reid let out a sharp, arrogant laugh, shaking his head as he adjusted his jacket. "Grandfather, we've discussed this! Marissa and I have signed a formal agreement with a top fertility clinic in San Francisco. We will have an heir by next autumn! You aren't going to collapse a four-billion-dollar merger over a six-month technicality!"
"It is not a technicality, Reid," Arthur said softly. "And you are no longer the only option for the trust."
Reid’s laugh cut off abruptly. "What is that supposed to mean?"
Arthur turned toward the open double doors behind him.
"Bring her in," Arthur commanded flatly.
Every head in the boardroom turned toward the rear entrance. Reid frowned, glancing past his grandfather with a look of growing, uneasy irritation. Marissa stood up from her chair in the gallery, her designer heels clicking nervously against the floor.
Standing in the doorway, framed by two high-ranking security guards, was a woman dressed in a sleek, tailored navy blue pant suit. Her dark hair fell in elegant waves over her shoulders, her chin was held high, and her face radiated a calm, unyielding, breathtaking authority.
In her arms, wrapped in a soft white cashmere blanket, was a nine-month-old infant boy with striking dark hair and dark sapphire eyes.
Reid froze.
The color drained from his face so fast he looked as though he had been shot. His eyes locked onto my face, then slowly moved down to the infant in my arms.
"Claire...?" Reid whispered, his voice completely stripping of its former arrogance, dropping into a breathless, disbelieving gasp. "Claire... what are you doing here?"
Marissa rushed forward from the gallery, her eyes wide with toxic, panicked rage. "What is this trash?! Why is your ex-wife in a board meeting, Reid?!"
I didn't look at Marissa. I didn't look at the shocked board members whispering furiously around the mahogany table.
I walked slowly down the center aisle, my heels sounding like war drums against the marble floor, until I stood directly across the table from the man who had discarded me on the courthouse steps nine months ago.
"Hello, Reid," I said, my voice smooth, cold, and echoing with absolute, terrifying power. "I believe you remember what I told you nine months ago before I walked away."
Reid’s chest heaved, his eyes wide with a frantic, desperate realization as he stared at the infant’s dark sapphire eyes—eyes that were an exact, undeniable replica of his own.
"You..." Reid stammered, his hands shaking as he gripped the edge of the mahogany table. "You were... you were pregnant?"
"This is Julian Miller Ashford," Arthur declared, his voice booming over the room like a thunderclap. "Born nine months ago in Chicago. Certified by three independent genetic laboratories under my personal supervision. He is the firstborn, legitimate male heir of the Ashford bloodline."

Arthur looked at his stunned, speechless grandson with cold, absolute contempt.
"And under Section 4-A of the Master Trust Charter," Arthur revealed, "because Reid Ashford discarded the mother of the legitimate heir without corporate disclosure, fifty-one percent of the master voting stock of Ashford Global Holdings is hereby transferred immediately into an irrevocable trust... managed exclusively by his mother, Claire Miller."
