Chapter 5 - The Gathering StormBy July, my pregnancy was unmistakably visible, and the Gold Coast estate had transformed into a fortress of absolute security. Dr. Vance visited twice a week, and every meal was vetted by Dominic’s trusted staff. Yet, beneath the domestic calm, a storm was brewing in the underworld.

The Santoro family, feeling marginalized by Dominic’s sudden withdrawal from several shared shipping routes and his absolute focus on our expanding family, began making aggressive moves.

It started with intercepted cargo shipments in the port of Gary, then escalated to threatening messages left at the gates of our estate.

I tried to act brave, but I knew what it meant. In Dominic’s world, a perceived weakness—like a Don falling in love and starting a family—was an invitation for jackals to circle.

One afternoon, while Dominic was locked in his underground security bunker reviewing tactical reports with Marco and three of his senior capos, I decided to walk in the private garden near the greenhouse to get some fresh air.

The summer sun was warm, filtering through the towering oak trees. I rubbed my seven-month pregnant belly, feeling a comforting kick from our baby boy—a little reminder of life amidst the looming violence.

Suddenly, the birds in the trees went completely silent.

A heavy, unnatural crunch of gravel echoed from behind the dense boxwood hedge.

I froze. “Hello?”

No one answered. But the hair on the back of my neck stood straight up.

I turned around slowly, my heart slamming against my ribs. Stepping out from the shaded path near the greenhouse was a man I didn't recognize—tall, wearing a dark security uniform with a silver pin on his collar that didn't belong to Dominic’s detail.

In his right hand, he held a silenced pistol.

“Mrs. Russo,” the man said with a cold, professional smile. “Don Santoro sends his regards.”

Terror paralyzed my limbs for a fraction of a second. My hand flew to my pocket where I kept Dominic’s encrypted house phone, but before my fingers could graze the glass screen, the man lunged forward, grabbing my arm and yanking me hard against his chest. The cold barrel of the gun pressed firmly against my temple.

“Don’t make a sound,” he hissed, dragging me backward toward the perimeter wall where an unmarked van was idling against the outer gate.

My mind raced. Fight back. Drop your weight. Scream.

Before I could draw breath to scream, the air behind us exploded with sound.

Bang.

A muffled crack echoed through the garden. The man holding me stiffened instantly. His eyes rolled back into his head, and his grip on my arm completely slackened as he collapsed onto the manicured grass, dragging me down with him.

I scrambled away, gasping for air, tears streaming down my face.

Standing ten yards away, holding a smoking Glock with both hands, was Dominic.

His face was terrifyingly pale, his eyes dilated with pure, unadulterated primal fury. He looked like an avenging angel of death. Behind him, Marco and six armed guards came sprinting through the garden hedges, securing the perimeter in seconds.

Dominic dropped his gun to the grass and crossed the distance between us in three long, frantic strides. He dropped to his knees in the dirt, pulling me into his arms with crushing force.

“Chloe! Chloe, look at me. Are you hurt? Did he touch you?” Dominic demanded, his voice cracking with raw, unfiltered terror as his shaking hands checked every inch of my body.

“I’m okay,” I sobbed, burying my face in his chest as the adrenaline finally gave way to shock. “I’m okay, Dominic. The baby is okay.”

Dominic crushed me against him, burying his face in my hair, his shoulders trembling with a grief and rage so intense it frightened me.

“I’m going to burn their entire empire to ash,” Dominic whispered against my ear, his voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute slaughter. “Every last one of them.”
