Chapter 7 - The Horizon Beyond the GlassSix months after the boardroom takeover, the spring air in Manhattan carried the crisp, sweet scent of blooming magnolias and fresh beginnings.

The transition of Bennett-Cross Global Logistics was complete. Under Evelyn’s visionary leadership, the company had pivoted toward sustainable oceanic transport, restoring her father’s original vision of eco-friendly, ethical shipping infrastructure. The toxic culture of intimidation and corporate bullying that had defined the Whitaker era was thoroughly purged, replaced by an environment of rigorous integrity and mutual respect.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, Evelyn stood on the private terrace of her newly renovated penthouse overlooking Central Park. The sprawling green canopy below was bathed in the golden light of a late-afternoon sun.

There were no media crews outside her building. No paparazzi hiding behind bushes. No late-night television hosts making cheap jokes about her quiet life.

The door behind her clicked open, and familiar footsteps crossed the hardwood floor.

Nathan stepped onto the terrace carrying two crystal flutes filled with sparkling cider—a toast to their latest successful international trade agreement. He handed one to Evelyn, his fingers brushing hers with a warmth that never failed to send a quiet thrill through her chest.

“Penny for your thoughts, CEO Bennett,” Nathan said with a gentle smile, leaning against the stone railing beside her.

Evelyn took a sip of the cider, watching a flock of birds soar across the pale blue sky toward the horizon.

“I was just thinking about that night at the Grand Astoria,” Evelyn confessed, her lips curving into a soft, amused smile. “About how terrified I was when I first stepped out of that elevator.”

“You didn’t look terrified,” Nathan laughed softly. “You looked like an executioner walking into a royal court.”

“I wasn't an executioner,” Evelyn said, turning her gaze to meet his warm, steady eyes. “I was just a woman finally stepping out of the shadow of someone else’s expectations.”

Nathan raised his glass, clinking it gently against hers. “To stepping out of the shadows, and owning the entire sky.”

“To new beginnings,” Evelyn replied, her voice steady, clear, and filled with a profound, unshakeable joy.

The past was a locked door she no longer needed to open. The empire was hers, her heart was free, and as she looked out at the endless horizon stretching across Manhattan, she knew the best chapter of her life was only just beginning.
