Chapter 4 - The Glass Cage Cracks“What is this?” Grant demanded, thrusting the manila envelope toward her chest. His polished composure had completely dissolved, replaced by the panicked fury of a man whose entire world was unravelling in real time. “What kind of game are you playing with Nathan Cross? Did you sign some fake legal papers behind my back?”

Evelyn didn't touch the envelope. She simply looked down at it, then back up into his panicked eyes.
“They aren't fake, Grant,” she said, her voice low and even, cutting through the hum of the hallway. “You spent eight years telling everyone I was quiet. You thought quiet meant stupid. You thought because I didn’t scream when you stayed out late with models, or when you let your brother mock me at the breakfast table, that I had no spine.”
“Evelyn, listen to me,” Grant hissed, grabbing her wrist—the exact same gesture he used when he wanted to pull her away from reporters or silence her at charity dinners.
Only this time, Evelyn didn't freeze.
With a sharp, practiced twist born of three months of private self-defense classes he never knew she was taking, she wrenched her arm free from his grip. The sound of her sudden movement caused two nearby bodyguards hired by Nathan Cross to step forward instantly, their massive shoulders blocking Grant from getting close again.
“Don't ever touch me again,” Evelyn said, her voice dropping an octave, carrying a lethal authority that made Grant step back involuntarily. “You called me boring on national television. You let the world laugh at the invisible wife. Well, congratulations, Grant. Everyone is looking at me now.”
“You think you can run a multi-billion-dollar logistics firm?!” Grant snarled, his face twisting in desperate anger. “You don't know the first thing about supply chains, debt leverage, or board politics! Without me, you’re just a lonely woman in a fancy dress!”
“No, Grant,” a smooth, deep voice interrupted from behind them.
Nathan Cross stepped out of the elevator lobby, sliding his hands casually into his pockets as he joined Evelyn. He looked at Grant the way a seasoned zoologist looks at a trapped animal thrashing in a cage.
“She’s not alone,” Nathan said calmly. “And as for supply chains, Evelyn has been auditing your freight margins for the last six months while you were busy buying yachts for Lila Monroe. She found a forty-million-dollar accounting discrepancy in your Q3 filings. The SEC has already been notified.”
Grant’s knees nearly buckled. He stared from Nathan to Evelyn, the horrifying realization washing over him that he wasn't just losing a wife—he was facing federal investigation, public ruin, and total financial annihilation.
“You... you planned this,” Grant whispered, staring at Evelyn as if she were a ghost.

“I didn't plan anything, Grant,” Evelyn said softly, stepping backward into the private elevator as the brass doors began to slide shut. “I just stopped making excuses for you.”
The doors closed, sealing him in the golden hallway with his ruined empire, while Evelyn descended into the cool, quiet Manhattan night.
