Chapter 6 - Shadows of the PastDespite the monumental success of her professional life and the peaceful sanctuary she had built at home, a quiet Saturday afternoon brought an unexpected reminder of the past.

Megan was sitting on the plush white rug in her living room, watching Noah practice tummy time. The five-month-old baby propped himself up on his chubby arms, letting out a joyful squeal as he reached for a rattle shaped like a silver elephant.

The doorbell rang.

Frowning slightly—rarely did anyone visit without prior notice, given the strict residential security protocols now in place—Megan stood up, scooped Noah into her arms, and walked down the wide hallway to the front entrance.

She opened the heavy wooden door.

Standing on the porch was a woman looking frail and worn, dressed in a simple, unbranded trench coat that contrasted sharply with the designer wardrobe she used to flaunt.

It was Ashley.

Gone was the smug, triumphant smile, the expensive maternity clothes, and the haughty entitlement. Her blonde hair was pulled back carelessly, her face devoid of makeup, and her eyes red-rimmed with exhaustion.

“Megan,” Ashley whispered, her voice cracking slightly as she clutched a cheap canvas tote bag against her chest.

Megan didn't invite her in. She stood firmly in the doorway, her body shielding Noah protectively. Her voice was cool and measured.

“You’re trespassing, Ashley. The perimeter security sensors were alerted the moment you stepped onto the property. Federal marshals are twenty minutes away if you don't turn around right now.”

“I don't want trouble,” Ashley pleaded, taking an involuntary half-step back, tears spilling over her lower eyelids. “I just... I needed to see you. Ryan’s trial is over. He took a plea deal and blamed everything on me in his final testimony. My family has disowned me. I’m living in a studio apartment working night shifts at a diner just to pay for my legal fees.”

Megan looked at the woman standing on her porch. A few months ago, Ashley had sat in a corporate conference room, gloating over Megan’s supposed helplessness while carrying the child of a man who was already destroying their lives.

“You made your bed, Ashley,” Megan said quietly, her voice entirely devoid of anger or pity. “You chose greed, cruelty, and deceit because you thought it came with a luxury price tag. You thought you were smarter than everyone else in the room.”

Ashley burst into quiet, miserable sobs, covering her face with her hands. “I was a fool. He used me. He used all of us.”

“No,” Megan corrected gently. “You were a willing participant until the consequences caught up with you. I don't wish you harm, Ashley. But you will never, ever cross this threshold again.”

With that, Megan closed the heavy oak door with a firm, decisive click, locking the past outside where it belonged.

She turned around and walked back down the hallway, where the bright, warm laughter of her son echoed from the living room.
