Chapter 3 - Unraveling the WebThe conference room felt like a pressure cooker on the verge of exploding. The air was thick with the scent of expensive cologne, nervous sweat, and impending ruin.

Arthur Pendelton didn't wait for Ryan to recover his voice. The veteran auditor flipped open the first red-taped folder, pulling out a series of high-resolution bank statements, wire transfer confirmations, and hotel registration logs. He laid them out across the polished marble table like cards in a high-stakes poker game.

“Let’s start with Exhibit A,” Pendelton announced, his voice clinical and detached. He pointed a manicured finger at a highlighted line item. “On March 14th, exactly three weeks before Mrs. Carter went into premature labor, a wire transfer of four hundred and fifty thousand dollars was executed from the Carter Logistics primary development account in Zurich directly to an offshore shell company registered in the British Virgin Islands under the name Apex Consulting Group.”

Ryan swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing violently. “That... that was an acquisition fee for our new European software licensing partner! It’s standard procedure!”

“Is it?” Pendelton raised an eyebrow, sliding a second document across the table. “Because when our team subpoenaed the registry records for Apex Consulting Group, we found that the sole beneficiary and corporate officer of that shell company is not a European software firm. It is Miss Ashley Vance.”

A collective gasp echoed through the room.

Ashley gasped, her hands flying to her mouth as she stumbled backward into the wall. “That’s a lie! I didn't know anything about offshore accounts! Ryan told me it was just a consulting bonus!”

“You absolute fool!” Ryan snapped, turning on Ashley with a snarl of desperation. “Why would you say that out loud? You just confessed to conspiracy!”

“You told me I was safe!” Ashley shrieked, tears springing to her eyes as her carefully constructed facade of aristocratic elegance instantly crumbled. “You said she was just a stupid housewife who would take a meager settlement and crawl away!”

“Enough!” David Sterling slammed his cane against the parquet floor. The sharp crack echoed like a gunshot, instantly silencing the screaming match. The chairman turned his piercing gaze toward Ryan. “Mr. Carter, you have embezzled nearly three million dollars in corporate assets over the past eighteen months. You have utilized company resources to finance your personal affairs, compromised our impending IPO with foreign investors, and brought your mistress into our corporate offices while your wife was home carrying your child.”

Sterling paused, his expression hardening into stone.

“Effective immediately, the board of directors is suspending you from your position as CEO of Carter Logistics, pending a full criminal referral to the Department of Justice.”

Ryan’s knees buckled. He dropped heavily into his chair, staring blankly at the marble table. The tailored navy suit that had given him such an air of untouchable confidence now looked like a straitjacket. All the power, all the money, all the status he had spent a lifetime building had evaporated in less than ten minutes.

Megan looked down at her sleeping son, gently patting the baby’s back. There was no joy in her heart—only a deep, profound exhaustion, and the sweet, clean taste of absolute vindication.

“You wanted me to sign the divorce papers, Ryan,” Megan said quietly, stepping closer to the table and picking up the black leather folder. She opened it to the very last page—a pre-drafted default judgment of divorce, granting her full, unchallengeable legal custody of Noah, the entirety of the primary residential estate, and 100 percent of the forfeited Carter assets currently held in the trust.

She placed the document directly in front of him, along with a heavy gold pen.

“Sign,” Megan echoed his exact words from an hour ago. “You’re exhausted. Don’t make this into a drama.”
