Chapter 4 - The Fall of the House of CarterThe descent from corporate titan to disgraced pariah happened with terrifying speed.

By sunset, news of the emergency board meeting at Carter Logistics had leaked to the financial press. Within two hours, emergency alerts flashed across Bloomberg, CNBC, and the front page of the Wall Street Journal: CARTER LOGISTICS SUSPENDS CEO AMID MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT PROBE.

Ryan didn't make it out of the downtown office building before federal marshals intercepted him in the underground parking garage. As flashbulbs popped and reporters shouted aggressive questions from behind the security gates, Ryan was cuffed and led into the back of an unmarked federal transport van. His navy suit was wrinkled, his tie was ripped loose, and his face was buried in his hands to shield himself from the cameras.

Ashley fared little better. Abandoned by Ryan in the lobby of the office building when his credit cards were simultaneously frozen by the corporate fraud division, she sat stranded on a velvet bench, clutching her designer handbag while her phone buzzed incessantly with furious text messages from her own family demanding to know why federal investigators were auditing their trust funds.

Meanwhile, back at the sprawling suburban estate in Winnetka, a very different kind of evening was unfolding.

The heavy oak front doors swung open to reveal a quiet, immaculately clean hallway. The scent of lavender and baby powder replaced the suffocating tension of the downtown boardroom. Megan carried Noah upstairs to the nursery—a sunlit room painted in soft sage green and cream, featuring a handcrafted crib that Ryan had never even bothered to help assemble.

She laid the baby gently in his crib, watching as Noah let out a tiny sigh, curled his fingers into a loose fist, and drifted back into a deep, untroubled sleep.

For the first time in three years, Megan felt the heavy iron weight lift entirely from her chest. She walked over to the tall bay window, looking out over the sprawling backyard garden where the autumn wind rustled through the oak trees.

Her phone buzzed on the windowsill. It was a text message from David Sterling:

The emergency board vote concluded ten minutes ago, Mrs. Carter. You have been unanimously elected as the interim Chief Executive Officer of Carter Logistics. The office is yours whenever you are ready.

Megan stared at the screen, a quiet, genuine smile touching her lips. She wasn't just surviving anymore. She was rebuilding. On her terms.
