Chapter 4 - The AnnouncementThe ballroom had quieted down significantly by the time Adrian and I re-entered through the terrace doors. The heavy murmur of gossip followed our every step, but nobody dared approach us.

Ethan stumbled back into the ballroom a few paces behind us, looking like a man who had just survived a shipwreck only to realize he was stranded in the middle of a freezing ocean. Vanessa had wisely retreated toward the exit, distancing herself from the sinking ship as fast as her designer heels could carry her.
At the center of the raised dais, the master of ceremonies tapped gently on his microphone, signaling for silence.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the MC announced, his voice echoing smoothly across the room. “We are honored tonight to welcome Sheikh Adrian Rashid, who will be making a monumental announcement regarding his firm’s strategic investments in the North American tech and infrastructure sector.”
Polite, tense applause rippled through the crowd.
Adrian walked up the steps to the dais, stepping smoothly to the podium. He didn't use notes. He simply rested his hands on the mahogany lectern, his dark eyes scanning the sea of anxious faces before resting briefly on Ethan, who stood near the back of the room looking as though he were standing on the gallows.
“Good evening,” Adrian began, his voice carrying effortlessly without a single microphone artifact. “Tonight, capital markets are often driven by noise, flash, and superficial presentation. We see companies built on stolen foundations, driven by executives who mistake self-promotion for genuine innovation.”
Ethan visibly flinched. Several venture capitalists shifted uncomfortably in their seats, whispering among themselves.
“True value,” Adrian continued, raising his voice slightly, “does not lie in the slick presentation decks or the expensive marketing campaigns curated to impress polite society. True value lies in preservation, in resilience, and in the quiet architects who build the infrastructure that allows others to stand tall.”
He paused, looking directly toward the spot where I stood near the edge of the crowd.
“For the past six months, my investment fund has been conducting a comprehensive audit of emerging technological assets in the United States,” Adrian announced. “We were prepared tonight to announce a multi-billion-dollar injection into Blake Technologies—a firm that promised revolutionary breakthroughs in logistics analytics.”
A collective gasp of excitement rippled through the room. Ethan’s eyes bulged with sudden, wild hope. He straightened his tie, a desperate, triumphant grin spreading across his face as he thought he had somehow snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
“However,” Adrian’s voice dropped into a chilling, authoritative register, “our due diligence uncovered critical irregularities. We found that the core intellectual property of Blake Technologies was acquired under fraudulent pretenses from an independent Boston software firm that was systematically dismantled four years ago.”
The silence in the ballroom became absolute, suffocating, and terrifying.
Ethan’s triumphant grin froze on his face, morphing into a mask of pure horror.

“Furthermore,” Adrian continued calmly, “investigations by federal regulatory bodies into corporate embezzlement and intellectual property theft are currently underway. Therefore, not only is Sheikh Enterprises withdrawing all consideration of funding for Blake Technologies, but we are also filing an emergency injunction to freeze all remaining corporate assets effective immediately.”
The room erupted into absolute pandemonium.
