Chapter 2 - The Billionaire's InterceptionThe silence that spread outward from Sheikh Adrian Rashid’s footsteps was absolute. Conversations withered mid-sentence. Heads turned. Even the string quartet near the balcony seemed to soften their tempo, intimidated by the sheer gravity of the man cutting across the polished floor.

Ethan had spent the last six months trying to secure a five-minute meeting with Sheikh Adrian. He had hired consultants, redone his pitch decks three times, and hovered around every charity gala and private club where the billionaire was rumored to appear, all in a desperate bid to land the capital required to keep Blake Technologies afloat after a disastrous product launch last quarter.

And now, the man who held the keys to Ethan’s entire future was ignoring him completely.

Sheikh Adrian walked past a cluster of prominent city councilmen and high-ranking venture capitalists without sparing them a single glance. His dark, sharp eyes remained fixed on me. When he stopped directly in front of me, the air in the room felt suspended.

“Claire,” he said, his voice deep, smooth, and carrying a quiet authority that commanded absolute attention.

My heart skipped a beat. We had only met once, nearly three years ago, during an exclusive architectural preservation symposium in Geneva where I had presented a paper on restoring historic Ottoman facades. At the time, Adrian had been just another anonymous delegate in the audience—or so I had thought, until I learned his true identity months later. I had assumed he would have forgotten me amid the sea of academic elites and wealthy patrons.

“Your Highness,” I murmured, dipping my head slightly in polite acknowledgment. “I’m surprised you remember me.”

“Of course I remember you,” Adrian replied, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. His gaze swept over the room before returning to my face. “Some people never recognize the most valuable person in the room.”

Across the space, Ethan finally found his footing. He hurried over, his face flushed with a desperate, ingratiating smile, his hand outstretched as though he were greeting a lifelong friend.

“Your Highness! I’m Ethan Blake, CEO of Blake Technologies,” Ethan blurted out, breathless and entirely lacking his usual boardroom composure. “It is an absolute honor to have you here tonight. My team and I have prepared an extensive portfolio regarding our upcoming AI-driven logistics infrastructure—we would be thrilled to schedule a private briefing——”

Adrian didn't shake Ethan’s hand. He didn't even look at his extended palm. Instead, his eyes flicked down to Ethan with an expression of icy, professional disdain that made several nearby executives wince.

“Mr. Blake,” Adrian said slowly, letting each syllable drop like lead weights. “I am quite familiar with your company. And I am quite familiar with how you treat your foundation.”

Ethan blinked, completely disoriented by the chilly reception. He glanced sideways at Vanessa, who was now nervously twisting the strap of her evening bag, before forcing a brittle laugh.

“I’m... I’m not quite sure I follow, sir. My foundation?”

“Your fiancé,” Adrian corrected smoothly, stepping slightly closer to my side and extending his arm. “Or rather, the woman you so casually sidelined tonight in favor of... superficial companionship.”

The collective gasp that echoed through the surrounding crowd was audible. Several society columnists near the bar instantly reached for their phones, their fingers flying across screens to document the unfolding disaster.

Ethan’s face drained of all color, turning a pasty, sickly gray. “Sir, I assure you, this is a private matter—Claire and I—she wasn’t invited because—”

“Because she didn't fit the image you wished to project?” Adrian interrupted, his voice cutting through Ethan’s stammering excuses like a scalpel. He turned back to me, his demeanor instantly softening into warmth. “Claire, would you do me the honor of joining me for the main terrace? The indoor acoustics here are becoming rather... suffocating.”

I looked from Ethan’s panicked, shattered expression to Adrian’s steady, reassuring eyes. For four years, I had made myself small to accommodate Ethan’s fragile ego. I had hidden my own achievements, swallowed my pride, and accepted being treated like an invisible accessory.

I slipped my hand into the crook of Adrian’s arm.

May you like

“I would love to,” I said clearly, letting my voice carry across the silent ballroom.

As we walked away toward the glass terrace doors, leaving Ethan and Vanessa stranded under the harsh glare of a hundred judgmental stares, I knew the night was only just beginning.
