Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses“You... you set me up!” Julian roared, lunging forward with a desperate, animalistic fury, his hands outstretched as if he wanted to choke the life out of me right there in the hospital bed.

He didn’t even take two steps.

The two United States Marshals flanking Agent Miller moved with lightning speed. One of them grabbed Julian’s arm, twisting it behind his back with brutal efficiency, while the other shoved him face-first against the hospital wall with a dull thump. The expensive gold Rolex clattered against the linoleum floor, spinning wildly in a circle.

“Hands behind your back! Do not resist!” Agent Miller commanded, snapping the cold steel cuffs around Julian’s wrists with a sharp, metallic click.

Sienna shrieked, covering her mouth with both hands as she backed away until she hit the wall, her designer houndstrooth jacket trembling violently. “This is a mistake! You can’t arrest him! Do you know who his family is?! Do you know who we are?!”

Eleanor Vance pushed her way forward, her aristocratic facade completely shattered, her face mottled with purple rage. She pointed a shaking, manicured finger directly at Agent Miller’s chest. “My husband is Senator Vance’s cousin! You will release my son this instant or you’ll find yourselves stripped of your badges before the sun sets!”

Arthur Thorne chuckled—a dry, sophisticated sound that dripped with absolute contempt. He reached into his leather briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of certified documents, holding them up for the Vance matriarch to see.

“Mrs. Vance, your husband’s political immunity expired the moment your son used family foundation accounts to funnel slush funds into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands,” Arthur said smoothly. “In fact, federal investigators are currently reviewing wire transfers originating from your personal savings account that helped finance those very shell corporations. Shall I call the marshals to bring an extra set of cuffs for you as well?”

Eleanor recoiled as if she had been slapped across the face with a wet fish. She stumbled backward, grabbing onto the arm of her eldest daughter for support, completely speechless.

Julian strained against the marshal holding him against the wall, his face pressed against the drywall, veins bulging in his neck. He turned his head sideways, his eyes locking onto mine with a mixture of sheer terror and burning, pathetic hatred.

“Clara... please,” Julian choked out, his voice cracking into a ragged sob. “The boys... they’re your sons too! You can’t do this to our family! Drop the charges! Tell them it’s a misunderstanding! I’ll give you anything—half the estate, the Hamptons house, anything you want!”

I looked down at Julian, my expression as cold and smooth as polished marble.

“Yesterday, you brought twenty people into my hospital room while I was recovering from major surgery, threw a $150,000 check in my face, and demanded I surrender my children and my dignity so you could run off with your mistress,” I said quietly, every word dropping into the silent room like a lead weight. “You thought you had bought my silence. You thought my signature on your divorce papers was the end of me.”

I leaned forward, resting my hands calmly over the white duvet.

“You forgot one basic rule of business, Julian,” I finished softly. “Never back a desperate mother into a corner unless you’re fully prepared to burn down in the fire she starts.”

Agent Miller gave Julian a sharp shove toward the doorway. “Let’s go, Mr. Vance. Your new accommodations at the federal detention center are waiting.”

As Julian was dragged out of the room, his shoes scraping frantically against the floor, Sienna burst into hysterical tears, grabbing her expensive designer handbag and bolting out the door right behind him, desperate to distance herself from a sinking ship now that the money had vanished.

Eleanor Vance stood frozen for a second longer, glaring at me with pure venom, before turning on her heel and marching out of the room in tight, rigid strides, her family scattering like rats fleeing a burning ship.

The heavy oak door swung shut, leaving behind an absolute, profound silence.

Arthur Thorne closed his briefcase, snapping the latches shut with a crisp click. He walked over to the side of my bed, offering a polite, admiring bow of his head.

“Well, Mrs. Vance—or should I say, Ms. Sterling,” Arthur said with a faint smile. “The corporate restructuring is already underway. Under the emergency receivership statutes, all hidden assets recovered from Julian’s accounts revert directly to the primary wronged party. Which happens to be you.”

I looked over at the twin incubators, where Leo and Oliver were still sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of the storm their mother had just unleashed upon the world.

“Thank you, Arthur,” I whispered, a deep, overwhelming wave of peace washing over my soul. “Now... let’s make sure those custody papers Julian filed are officially thrown in the trash where they belong.”
