Chapter 5 - The Velvet CageTwo weeks had passed since the gala, and the fallout had been seismic.

The gossip columns had dubbed them Boston’s "Power Couple of the Century," printing endless speculation about the enigmatic nurse who had tamed the city's most feared mafia boss. Federal prosecutor Vance had temporarily retreated, bogged down by legal pushback from Dominic’s high-priced defense attorneys, and Liam had been quietly relocated to a clean, safe apartment in Vermont with a fresh start and a college tuition fund paid in full.
And Norah remained in the east wing.
The estate had become her strange, gilded prison. Carla had stopped treating her like an intruder and started treating her with a grim, efficient respect. Meals were served on silver platters in the grand dining room; books appeared on her reading table before she even knew she wanted them; and every evening at seven o'clock, Dominic returned from his downtown offices, walking into her sitting room as naturally as if they had been married for forty years.
Yet, despite the luxury, the tension between them was growing unbearable.
It was a Tuesday evening when it finally snapped.
Norah was standing by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of her suite, watching the rain lash against the glass, when the door opened and Dominic walked in. He looked tired, his tie loosened and his jacket slung over one shoulder.
"You didn't touch your dinner," Dominic noted, tossing his jacket onto the sofa.
"I wasn't hungry," Norah replied without turning around. She kept her eyes fixed on the dark, churning ocean outside. "Dominic, we need to talk."
He stopped, sensing the shift in her tone. He walked slowly across the Persian rug until he was standing just behind her, close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "Talk about what?"
"About this." She turned around sharply, gesturing to the opulent room, the silk dress she wore, the ring on her finger. "How long is this charade supposed to last? The gala is over. Vance has backed off. My brother is safe in Vermont. The FBI isn't finding anything in your real estate holdings because there's nothing to find. You don't need a shield anymore."
Dominic’s expression darkened. "Who said anything about a charade?"
"Don't do that," Norah snapped, her voice cracking with suppressed frustration. "Don't pretend this is a real marriage. We made a transaction. You saved Liam, and I played your loyal little wife for the cameras. But I am suffocating here, Dominic! I'm an ER nurse. I belong in a hospital, helping people, walking on my own two feet—not locked away in a stone fortress like some medieval captive!"
In two swift strides, Dominic closed the distance between them. Before she could react, his hands shot out, gripping her shoulders, not roughly, but with an unyielding, possessive strength that pinned her in place.
"You think you're a captive?" he asked, his voice low, vibrating with a dangerous intensity. "Look at me, Norah."
"Let me go—"
"I will never let you go," he interrupted, his dark eyes blazing. "You walked into my back room with blood on your coat and desperation in your eyes, offering me your soul just to save your brother. I took that bargain. And I told you then—forever means forever."
"You can't just buy people!" she yelled, tears of frustration finally spilling over her lashes. "I'm not a piece of real estate! I'm not a trophy to display at galas to piss off the FBI!"
"You are my wife," Dominic growled, the mask finally slipping to reveal the raw, consuming obsession beneath. "The moment you put on that ring, the moment you stood beside me and threw words back in Vance’s face, you tied your life to mine. You think the underworld respects a temporary arrangement? You think my enemies wouldn't tear you apart the second I announced you were free?"
He pulled her closer, his chest pressing against hers, his breath hot against her forehead.
"You are safe here," he whispered fiercely, his voice dropping into something impossibly tender. "You are protected. But more than that... you are mine, Norah. And I am yours."
May you like
Norah stared up at him, her breath hitching in her throat. The anger inside her didn't vanish, but it collided with a sudden, overwhelming wave of heat and longing that terrified her even more. She opened her mouth to argue, but Dominic cut her off—not with words, but by crushing his lips down onto hers in a fierce, demanding kiss that stole every remaining thought from her mind.
It wasn't gentle. It was desperate, hungry, and absolute—an admission of a war they had both already lost.
