Chapter 7 - The Crown JewelThree months later, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was once again filled with the soft strains of a string quartet and the glittering lights of crystal chandeliers.

The occasion wasn't a superficial charity gala designed for social posturing. It was the official ribbon-cutting gala for the new downtown waterfront park and tech innovation hub—a multi-billion-dollar joint venture co-owned and co-led by Vancorp and Appleton Media.
Julian stood near the immense glass windows, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching the city skyline glow in the twilight. The old-guard board members who had tried to sabotage the deal had long since been forced out, their shares bought out by a newly restructured Vancorp operating under Julian’s absolute control.
He felt a familiar, comforting presence step up beside him.
Sarah wore a backless, emerald-silk gown that caught the ambient light like a masterpiece. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves over her shoulders, and her lips carried a gentle, knowing smile.
"You look terrified, Mr. Vance," Sarah teased softly, clinking her glass gently against his. "Are you worried I might reject you a second time?"
Julian laughed, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close against his side, feeling the natural, perfect fit of her body against his.
"I was never terrified of rejection, Sarah," Julian said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute, unwavering devotion. "I was only ever terrified of losing the only woman in the world who had the courage to tell me the truth."
Sarah smiled, resting her head against his shoulder as the orchestra swelled into a timeless melody.

"Well," she whispered, her emerald eyes sparkling with mischief and love. "You won the bet after all, Julian. Even if you had to change the rules to do it."
Julian smiled, kissing the top of her head as the city lights blinked endlessly across the glass. He didn't care about the bet anymore. He had lost his arrogance, his pride, and his superficial certainty—and in return, he had found something infinitely more valuable: a queen who stood beside him, unyielding, brilliant, and entirely his own.
