Chapter 5 - The SabotageThe waterfront development deal was scheduled for final board ratification on a crisp Thursday morning at Vancorp headquarters. It was the culmination of two months of grueling negotiations, brilliant compromises, and a growing, unspoken intimacy between Julian and Sarah that had transformed both of their lives.

Julian stood in his private office, adjusting his silk tie, feeling a sense of anticipation that had nothing to do with corporate profits and everything to do with the fact that Sarah would be sitting across the table as his equal partner.

The heavy oak door burst open without a knock.

Greg strode in, his face pale, holding a thick manila envelope and a printed digital tablet.

"Julian, we have a massive problem," Greg said, his voice shaking slightly. "The emergency audit committee just flagged Appleton Media’s primary asset transfer from three years ago. The city council is claiming there’s a zoning discrepancy on the old industrial lot."

Julian frowned, stepping forward. "That’s impossible. We audited their entire portfolio twice. Everything is clean."

"It was clean," Greg said, slamming the folder onto the desk. "Until an anonymous tip was filed with the municipal ethics board this morning, alleging that Appleton Media used insider municipal information to acquire the land below market value. The press is already outside the building."

Julian’s blood ran cold. The ethical violation allegation was a nuclear bomb in commercial real estate. If the city council launched an investigation, Appleton Media would be frozen, Sarah’s reputation would be shredded in the tabloids, and the waterfront project would die instantly.

"Who filed the tip?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register.

Greg hesitated, looking away. "It... it came from an internal Vancorp IP address, Julian. Tied directly to the executive secondary server."

Julian’s mind raced. Only three people had access to the executive secondary server: himself, Greg... and his father’s old-guard faction on the board of directors who had opposed his partnership with Sarah from day one. They wanted to crush Appleton Media, force Sarah out, and buy the land for pennies on the dollar.

"Call a full board meeting immediately," Julian ordered, grabbing his suit jacket. "And get Sarah on the phone. Tell her not to speak to any reporters until I get to her office."
