Chapter 4 - The House of Cards CollapsesBack at the Plaza Hotel and across the financial district, Richard Hollis was having the worst morning of his life.

By nine o'clock, the financial news networks were already broadcasting emergency alerts. Mercer Global Capital acquires controlling stake in Hollis Heritage Hotels. Stock prices for Hollis enterprises were plummeting at a record-breaking velocity as institutional investors dumped shares in a blind panic.
Richard sat behind his massive mahogany desk in his corporate penthouse office, screaming into his speakerphone while his chief financial officer stood trembling by the door.
"What do you mean the accounts are frozen?!" Richard roared, his face purple with rage. "Every single operational account is tied to our primary credit line with Mercer Global! How can they freeze us without a court order?!"
"Sir," the CFO stammered, holding a thick sheaf of legal papers against his chest like a shield. "They... they didn't need a court order. The primary collateral backing all Hollis commercial loans for the last fifteen years was registered under a legacy trust called the Mercer-Vance Estate. And according to the legal filing submitted this morning... that trust belongs entirely to a majority shareholder who just activated emergency succession rights."
Richard stopped breathing. The color drained completely from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, ash-grey hue.
"Who?" Richard whispered, his voice cracking. "Who holds the trust?"
Before the CFO could answer, the heavy oak doors of Richard's office swung open.
Marcus Vance walked in, looking immaculate in a charcoal three-piece suit, a thin, amused smile playing on his lips. Behind him walked two federal marshals and corporate restructuring attorneys carrying thick briefcases.
"Good morning, Richard," Marcus said casually, walking over to pour himself a cup of coffee from the office sideboard.
"Marcus!" Richard yelled, standing up so fast his executive chair crashed backward onto the carpet. "What is the meaning of this?! Are you insane?! You're a partner in this firm!"
"Not anymore, Richard," Marcus corrected smoothly, taking a slow sip of coffee. "As of eight-thirty this morning, my allegiance—and my equity—lies with the rightful owner of this enterprise."
"Who owns it?!" Richard shrieked, slamming his fists onto the desk. "Name the bastard! I'll sue him into the stone age! I'll destroy him!"
"You can't sue her, Richard," a cool, composed voice echoed from the doorway.
The murmuring executives parted, and I stepped into the office.
I wasn't wearing the submissive, quiet navy gown of a neglected housewife. I wore a tailored, sharp white pantsuit, my hair pulled back in a sleek, commanding knot, with Jonathan Mercer walking quietly a half-step behind me like a guardian shadow.
Richard stared at me as if I were a ghost risen from the grave. His eyes darted from my face to Marcus, then to the federal marshals standing by the door.
"Margaret?" Richard muttered, shaking his head in frantic denial. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get past security? Get out of my office!"
"It's not your office, Richard," I said, my voice cutting through the room with crystal clarity. "It never was."
"You're... you're Margaret Hollis!" he yelled, panic clawing at his throat. "My wife! You cook, you clean, you stay in the background! You're nothing without me!"
"My name is Rebecca Mercer," I said, walking slowly toward his desk, my heels clicking sharply against the marble floor. "Daughter of Jonathan Mercer. The girl your family tried to erase twenty years ago when you stole my identity, stole my trust, and handed me over to a life of calculated servitude."
Richard staggered backward, his hands gripping the edge of the desk for support. "That's... that's insane. You're lying. There's no proof—"
"There's twenty years of forged adoption records, corporate wire transfers signed by your own father, and an active federal indictment for identity theft, fraud, and corporate embezzlement waiting for your signature," Marcus interrupted, tossing a thick dossier onto the desk right in front of him.
Richard looked down at the dossier, his hands shaking violently as he flipped open the cover. The forged court documents, the birth certificates, the financial audit trails—it was all there, laid out with mathematical and legal perfection.

"You're ruined, Richard," I said softly, standing just inches away from him. "The charity gala last night was your grand finale. You thought you were auctioning off a useless wife for twenty dollars. In reality... you were handing the keys of your entire empire to the woman you spent a decade trying to break."
Richard dropped to his knees, his hands clutching the edges of the desk, the arrogant, untouchable billionaire completely shattered into dust.
