Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Moretti Syndicate

The call disconnected with a sharp, electronic click as Grant hung up in sheer, unadulterated disbelief. He was standing on the marble steps of St. Bartholomew’s right now, surrounded by hundreds of society bluebloods, realizing that while he was busy orchestrating a sham wedding to cement his legacy, the woman he had discarded as barren had just given birth to a child whose lineage would shatter his entire corporate empire.

"He's coming," Dominic stated simply, his voice devoid of panic, carrying only the dark, lethal calm of a man who owned half the city’s concrete and all of its shadows.

"Let him," I whispered, tightening my arms around Lyra as she finally quieted down, drifting back into a peaceful sleep against my chest. "He thinks he can storm in here and demand answers. He thinks my life still revolves around his permission."

Dominic walked over to the large window, parting the blinds just enough to look down at the rain-slicked street below. "Grant Kingsley has spent his entire life believing that money and last names shield him from consequences. He doesn't understand that true power isn't written on a stock portfolio, Claire. It’s written in blood, loyalty, and the things people are willing to bury to protect their own."

My mind drifted back to the night I met Dominic Moretti. It had been three months after the finalized divorce—a night when the Gotham rain felt like needles, and I had wandered into an upscale downtown lounge, half-numb from grief, exhaustion, and the cruel reality of my medical diagnosis. Back then, Grant’s medical smears had convinced even me that my body was broken. I was a social outcast, exiled from the charity boards I had built, locked out of our penthouse, and drowning in a sea of whispered gossip.

Dominic had been sitting in the corner booth, observing the room like a sovereign surveying his court. When a drunken hedge-fund manager had approached my table, making snide remarks about the disgraced former Mrs. Kingsley, Dominic had intervened without raising his voice. One quiet word into the man's ear had sent the executive scrambling out of the lounge with pale terror in his eyes.

He hadn't asked for my sob story. He hadn't pitied me. He had simply slid a business card across the table—a plain black card with a single embossed gold letter M—and said, “You’re carrying a storm inside you, Claire. Stop hiding from the lightning.”

Over the next three months, Dominic had become my sanctuary. He provided the best private security, shielded my medical records from the digital prying eyes of Grant’s corporate spies, and most importantly, he looked at me not as a broken trophy wife, but as a survivor. He never pried into the exact timeline of my pregnancy, never asked if the child was a ghost of my past marriage or the proof of a new beginning. He simply accepted us, fiercely and unconditionally.

"The security detail outside has been doubled," Dominic said, turning back from the window. "My men are monitoring the elevators and the garage. If Grant thinks he can ditch his own wedding to play detective here, he’s going to find out what a real interrogation looks like."

"I don't want him near her, Dominic," I said, my voice hardening as I looked down at Lyra’s perfect, sleeping face. "He traded her existence for a photo op with Sienna. He doesn't get to look at her face. He doesn't get to claim a single second of what belongs to us."

Dominic crossed the room, stopping right beside the hospital bed. He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently brushing against my cheek, tracing the line of my jaw with an intimacy that made my breath catch.

"He won't touch her, Claire," Dominic promised, his eyes burning with an intensity that could melt steel. "Nobody touches what is mine."

Before I could process the heavy, thrilling weight of his words, the heavy oak door of the private VIP suite swung open with a violent crash.

There stood Grant Kingsley, still wearing his custom Brioni tuxedo, his bow tie ripped open at the collar, his face flushed a furious, mottled crimson, and his eyes wild with a mixture of terror and psychotic rage.

Behind him, two of Dominic’s elite security guards were sprawled unconscious on the floor of the hallway.

Grant didn't look at the guards. He didn't look at Dominic. His eyes locked entirely onto me—and the bundle in my arms.
