Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the BoardroomThe financial district of Chicago was bustling with morning commuters when I walked through the glass revolving doors of Sterling & Vance Holdings wearing a rumpled funeral suit, looking like a man resurrected from the dead—because I literally was.

News travels fast in the corporate world, but panic travels faster.
By the time I stepped off the private elevator onto the executive floor, the entire C-suite was in a state of absolute pandemonium. Junior analysts dropped their tablets, secretaries gasped and covered their mouths, and Board Chairman Harrison Vance—my late father’s oldest, most loyal partner—stood frozen in the doorway of his corner office, staring at me as if I were a phantom appearing in broad daylight.
"Ethan... my God..." Harrison breathed, stepping forward and grabbing my shoulders with trembling hands to verify I was flesh and blood. "We just received the death certificate yesterday! The funeral was scheduled for this morning! What in heaven's name is happening?"
"A hostile takeover, Harrison," I replied smoothly, walking past him into the board room and taking my rightful seat at the head of the polished mahogany table. "Except the hostile party tried to cremate me before the paperwork was even signed."
Harrison followed me inside, signaling for the executive doors to be locked tight. "Explain. Right now. The board has already received emergency emergency filings from Olivia claiming she holds executive power of attorney over your estate and corporate voting shares."
I tossed a heavy manila folder onto the center of the table. It slid across the wood and stopped right in front of him.
"Open it," I instructed.
Harrison flipped open the clasp. Inside were certified audio transcripts from the crematorium chapel, forensic toxicology lab reports pulled from independent clinics in Wisconsin that my private security had flagged weeks ago, and a complete financial audit tracing millions of dollars siphoned from my personal accounts into secret offshore accounts managed jointly by Olivia and Mason.
"They tried to poison me slowly for three months," I explained quietly, leaning back in my chair, my mind sharp and laser-focused. "Dizziness, fatigue, memory loss—they documented it all as stress so the coroner would sign off on natural cardiac arrest. When that took too long, they upped the dosage on the morning of the funeral."
Harrison’s face turned from pale shock to a dark, murderous fury. He slammed his hand onto the table. All these years I trusted that woman! And Mason—that physical therapist had free access to your home twice a week under the guise of rehabilitation!"
"A rehabilitation that was actually a slow assassination," I agreed. "Which brings us to right now."
"What do you want to do?" Harrison asked, his voice dropping into a hardened corporate battle-mode. "We can call the police, have them arrested immediately—"
"No," I interrupted, shaking my head slowly. "Police arrest is too clean. It gives them a trial, public defenders, and a chance to spin a narrative. Right now, Olivia thinks I am dead and cremated. She is sitting in my mansion right now, drafting the final probate documents to inherit my entire three-hundred-million-dollar empire."

I leaned forward, a cold, calculated smile touching the corners of my lips.
"Let her sign them, Harrison. Let her walk right into the trap. And when she tries to claim the throne at the emergency shareholder meeting this afternoon... that is when we lock the cage doors forever."
