Chapter 3 - The Interrogation and the Crumbling AllianceBy evening, the luxurious holding cells of the Denver central precinct had replaced the glittering skyline views for Grant and Ryan Carter.

Sitting in the glass-walled interrogation room across from Detective Miller and Marcus, Ryan looked like a broken man. His expensive suit was crumpled, his eyes bloodshot, and his hands trembled as he gripped the metal table.
“I want to talk to my wife,” Ryan muttered for the fifth time. “This is a domestic matter. She has no right to keep me from my home.”
Detective Miller slid a thick folder across the steel table and flipped it open, revealing high-resolution financial audits, bank routing numbers, and signed corporate authorization forms bearing Vanguard Tech digital seals.
“Let’s talk about domestic matters, Ryan,” Detective Miller said evenly. “Specifically, how a marketing vice president’s signature ended up authorizing fourteen million dollars in illegal wire transfers to Apex Holdings, a shell company registered in your father’s name.”
Ryan swallowed hard, trying to maintain a facade of arrogant innocence. “I... I don't know anything about shell companies. Claire manages her own investments. She must have made a mistake and tried to pin it on us—”
“Stop lying, Mr. Carter,” Marcus interrupted, leaning forward. “We pulled the IP logs and the MAC addresses of the devices used to execute those wire transfers. They originated from your personal laptop and your office desktop at Vanguard Tech. Furthermore, we have security camera footage from the bank in the Cayman Islands showing your father—Grant Carter—depositing physical bearer bonds bearing your joint signature.”
Ryan’s mouth worked silently, but no words came out. The web of lies he and his father had spun so carefully over the last year was unraveling thread by thread.
Down the hall in Interrogation Room B, Grant was handling his arrest with even less grace. He had already screamed himself hoarse, threatened to sue the city of Denver, threatened to have Detective Miller fired, and accused Diane and Brooke of betraying him.
Faced with the crushing weight of concrete evidence—including the audio transcripts of Grant bragging about how they would soon institutionalize me and take full control of my assets—the Carter family alliance began to fracture under the pressure.
At 9:00 p.m., Detective Miller received a frantic call from Diane Carter’s defense attorney.
“Mrs. Carter wishes to make a formal statement in exchange for immunity from conspiracy charges,” the attorney announced over speakerphone in the observation room.
Marcus glanced at me. I sat quietly in the observation chair, sipping a cup of herbal tea, watching my former mother-in-law nervously twist her wedding ring through the one-way glass.
“Let’s hear what she has to say,” I said quietly.
In the interrogation room, Diane broke down in tears within five minutes of questioning. She confessed everything: how Grant had masterminded the financial scheme, how Ryan had willingly participated to fund his lavish lifestyle and gambling debts, and how they had laughed together at dinner parties while mocking my trusting nature.
“I told them it went too far!” Diane sobbed into a tissue, playing the victim as she always did. “I told Grant that burning a pregnant girl with a cigarette was insane! But Ryan said I should stay quiet or he’d cut me off from the trust fund!”
Detective Miller recorded every second of the confession.

When the interview concluded, Detective Miller stepped into the observation room and looked at me with deep professional respect.
“Well, Claire, your mother-in-law just handed us the final nail for both Grant and Ryan's coffins. With Diane's testimony, the financial forensics, and the medical records of your burn, they won't just face fraud charges—they’re looking at severe prison sentences without the possibility of parole.”
