Chapter 2 - The Sunrise Eviction and the Frozen AccountsNew Year’s Day dawned bright and freezing across Denver, casting long, sharp shadows across the snow-covered streets. Inside the luxury penthouse, however, the atmosphere was thick with panic.

At 8:00 a.m. sharp, Detective Miller of the Denver Police Department stood in the grand foyer of the penthouse, flanked by two uniformed officers and Marcus Vance carrying a heavy briefcase of federal subpoenas.

Ryan looked like a man who hadn't slept. His hair was disheveled, his expensive silk shirt wrinkled, and his face pale. Grant stood behind him in a plush bathrobe, scowling darkly, while Diane and Brooke hovered near the kitchen island looking terrified.

“What is the meaning of this?” Grant barked, stepping forward. “Do you know who I am? We are guests—no, this is our family home! Get these cops out of here!”

Detective Miller didn't flinch. He pulled a folded document from his coat pocket and snapped it open.

“Grant Carter, Ryan Carter, you are both hereby served with emergency restraining orders, criminal summonses for aggravated assault, and a federal warrant for financial fraud, forgery, and grand larceny,” Detective Miller announced crisply, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

Ryan lunged forward, his face twisting in desperate rage. “Fraud? Are you insane? My wife—Claire—she’s unstable! She threw a tantrum last night and smashed our dinner table because she’s suffering from prenatal hysteria! She owns nothing here that isn't shared marital property!”

Marcus stepped out from behind the detective, holding a sleek black tablet displaying certified legal documents. He pushed his glasses up his nose and offered Ryan a chilly, razor-sharp smile.

“Marital property?” Marcus chuckled softly. “Let’s review the prenuptial agreement you signed under independent legal counsel four years ago, Ryan. Section 4, Paragraph B: All pre-marital real estate holdings, executive stock options, and venture capital portfolios remain strictly non-marital, separate property. Furthermore, Vanguard Tech executive shares cannot be transferred without biometric verification—which your lovely wife never gave.”

Ryan’s jaw dropped. He snatched the tablet from Marcus’s hands, scrolling frantically through the financial ledgers. His eyes bulged as he saw the Apex Holdings wire transfers highlighted in bright red.

“This... this is a mistake,” Ryan stammered, looking around wildly. “Dad, they hacked our system—”

“Shut up, you idiot!” Grant hissed, grabbing Ryan’s arm. He turned his venomous glare toward Marcus and the police. “This is a civil dispute! She’s my daughter-in-law! She’ll drop these charges the second she calms down!”

“She’s not calming down,” a cold, firm voice rang out from the elevator foyer.

The heavy private elevator doors slid open. I stepped out, dressed in a sharp charcoal cashmere coat, my hair pulled back into a sleek ponytail, and my head held high. A private security guard stood on either side of me, ensuring a safe perimeter.

Diane gasped, covering her mouth, while Brooke shrank back against the kitchen counter.

Ryan stared at me as if I were a ghost. “Claire... baby, please. You’re blowing this out of proportion. Dad made a mistake with the cigarette, it was just a joke gone wrong, a lesson in respect—we’re family—”

I stopped three feet away from him. The memory of the burning heat against my skin flared in my mind, but it didn't make me cry; it made me invincible.

“Family?” I whispered, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. “You held my wrists while your father burned my skin and branded our unborn child. You looted fourteen million dollars from my accounts, hoping to leave me penniless and locked away.”

I turned to Detective Miller. “Officer, please execute the asset freeze immediately.”

Marcus clicked a button on his remote, and instantly, every smart-home device in the penthouse chimed. The security system locked down, the smart locks re-keyed themselves to my personal biometric profile, and Ryan’s phone buzzed violently with notification after notification.

Ryan pulled his phone out, his face turning the color of ash. “My... my cards are declined. Vanguard Tech just locked my corporate login. They... they fired me.”

“Effective immediately,” Marcus said smoothly. “Your corporate access was terminated at 7:45 a.m. for embezzlement and corporate espionage.”

Grant lost his temper completely. He lunged forward, roaring like a caged animal, aiming a fist straight at my face. “You ungrateful little bitch! I’ll kill you—”

He didn't even take two steps before both security guards tackled him to the floor, pinning his face against the imported Italian marble tile while Detective Miller snapped steel handcuffs around his wrists.

“Grant Carter, you are under arrest for attempted assault, conspiracy, and resisting law enforcement,” Detective Miller declared, hauling the thrashing, screaming old man to his feet.

Ryan dropped to his knees, grabbing the hem of my coat. “Claire, please! Don't do this! We have a history! Think of the baby!”

May you like

I looked down at him, my expression completely devoid of mercy.

“The baby and I are going to have a wonderful life,” I said softly, stepping out of his grasp. “And you are going to spend the next twenty years wearing orange.”
