Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost BakeryBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor executive suite at The Blackwood Tower overlooking Boston Harbor was locked down under absolute, non-negotiable security.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security operators guarded every corridor. Inside, I sat in a high-backed velvet armchair, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket provided by Damen’s staff, sipping hot chamomile tea while a private medical technician treated the cuts on my knees and applied a cooling balm to my cheek.
Across the broad black granite table sat Damen Blackwood, alongside Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton and two federal forensic accounting experts.
Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers and wiretap transcripts flat onto the table toward Damen and me:
"Damen, Clara," Bridget spoke flatly, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Frankie Vance, Victor Vance, and the Marseilles Logistics Syndicate is complete."
Damen leaned back in his executive chair, his fingers intertwined, his gray eyes locked onto my face. "Tell her, Bridget."
Bridget tapped the digital screens:
THE BAKERY SABOTAGE DOSSIER: Wiretaps proving Victor Vance paid off local municipal inspectors to revoke Clara's business licenses before orchestrating the armed assault at Honey and Hearth.
THE THIRTY-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Proof that Victor Vance systematically diverted $30 million from the Blackwood Maritime Trust over three years to fund illegal gambling rings in Monaco.
THE SOVEREIGN CHARTER: Original federal deeds confirming Clara Mitchell as sole administrative beneficiary of the Vance-Mitchell Heritage Trust, worth $120 million, which Victor Vance had illegally suppressed following her father's death.
My hands tightened around my teacup until the porcelain creaked. The shock of the evening began to burn away, replaced by a clean, weightless, diamond-hard fury.
"They didn't just attack my bakery, Damen," I rasped out, every word falling like an iron block into the silent room. "They killed my father five years ago and stole my family's trust while I worked sixteen-hour shifts behind a counter flour-dusted and exhausted."
Damen stood up slowly from behind his desk. He walked around the granite counter until he stood inches in front of my chair.
May you like
He crouched flat onto one knee in front of me, taking my small, bandage-wrapped hands into his broad, calloused palms, pressing his lips gently against my knuckles.
"They thought you were just an innocent baker, Clara," Damen promised, his deep baritone an iron oath that shook the very room. "Because they thought beauty had no teeth. Tomorrow morning, I put the entire weight of the Blackwood empire behind your name."
