Chapter 4 - The Los Angeles ConnectionTen minutes later, the glass doors swung open, and Vanessa Cole walked into the conference room.

She looked nothing like the polished, untouchable Instagram celebrity who usually graced the society pages. Her hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, her designer trench coat was wrinkled, and her eyes were bloodshot and wide with panic. She walked with the frantic, jerky movements of someone who realized she was standing too close to a collapsing building.
She stopped dead when she saw me sitting at the head of the table, eight months pregnant, wearing a simple cashmere sweater and watching her with cold, unwavering eyes.
“Sarah,” Vanessa breathed out, her voice trembling slightly. She swallowed hard, looking desperately at Sterling. “Mr. Hale... I didn't know. I swear to God, I didn't know how far Eleanor was willing to go.”
“Sit down, Miss Cole,” Sterling said, pointing to a leather chair opposite the table. He didn't offer her tea. He didn't offer her a smile. “You are currently standing in the middle of a federal civil and criminal investigation. Every word you say is being recorded by three separate legal devices. Choose your narrative very carefully.”
Vanessa dropped into the chair, her hands shaking as she pulled a leather folio from her bag and slid it across the mahogany table.
“I brought receipts,” she whispered. “I brought everything. Emails, wire transfer records, call logs between myself and Eleanor stretching back six months.”
I leaned forward, my heart hammering against my ribs. “What does Eleanor have to do with David’s accident?”
Vanessa looked at me, her eyes shimmering with genuine fear. “Sarah... David’s car didn't go through that guardrail by accident.”
The breath left my lungs in a single, violent rush. The room seemed to tilt on its axis. For weeks, the police report had haunted my dreams—accidental loss of control on wet pavement, zero evidence of foul play, closed case.
“Explain,” Sterling commanded, leaning over the table so his face was inches from hers.
“Eleanor wanted David out of the way before the annual board meeting in November,” Vanessa said, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. “She knew David was planning to restructure the entire holding company and cut her and Chloe out of the executive trust entirely. She told me... she told me that if I could lure him out to Los Angeles under the guise of an emergency real estate acquisition, she would take care of the rest.”
“Take care of the rest how?” I demanded, my hands gripping the edge of the table so hard my knuckles turned white.
“She hired a specialized vehicle tampering crew,” Vanessa sobbed, covering her face with her hands. “They disabled the brake line calibration sensors on his rental car at LAX while he was in the terminal. Eleanor told me it would just look like a freak accident on the coastal highway—just enough to hospitalize him, force a medical proxy transfer, and give her control of the voting shares while he was in a coma. None of us... none of us knew his car would go off the cliff.”
The room was so quiet you could hear the hum of the air conditioning vents through the ceiling.
My mind flashed back to the last morning I saw David alive—the way he had knelt in front of me, gripped my hands, and told me he had secured the fortress. He hadn't just been talking about estate planning. He had known. Somehow, in the days leading up to his trip, David had uncovered what his mother was planning. He had known he was walking into a trap, but he had gone anyway to protect our family’s future from being swallowed entirely by her greed.
“You’re an accessory to conspiracy and manslaughter, Miss Cole,” Sterling said coldly, breaking the silence. He tapped his pen against the table. “However, under federal cooperation guidelines, if you sign a full witness deposition detailing Eleanor’s direct involvement and hand over every communication recording you have, my firm will recommend immunity from criminal prosecution.”

Vanessa didn't hesitate for a single second. She grabbed the pen Sterling pushed toward her and signed her name across the bottom of the deposition form with frantic, tearing strokes.
“I’ll give you everything,” Vanessa whispered, her voice breaking. “Just keep that monster away from me.”
