Chapter 7 - Dawn Over the EstateThe morning sun broke over the snowy Illinois pines, painting the frost-covered landscape in brilliant shades of gold and amber. The wreckage of the night before had been cleared away, and a profound, sacred silence settled over the Hayes estate.

I sat on the white leather sofa in the east wing nursery, watching the golden light spill across the floorboards.

Sophie was fast asleep in her crib, breathing deeply and peacefully.

The heavy oak door opened softly, and Dominic walked in. He wore a clean black shirt, the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, holding a steaming mug of coffee in one hand. He stopped beside the crib, looking down at his daughter with a quiet, enduring reverence before walking over to sit beside me on the sofa.

He didn't say anything for a long time. He simply handed me the mug of coffee, his fingers brushing against mine.

“The federal task force processed Vance’s encrypted files this morning,” Dominic finally broke the silence, his voice low and steady. “Your husband’s name has been officially cleared. The government has issued a formal apology and a settlement for the cover-up orchestrated by the corrupt officials Vance was paying off.”

Tears pricked my eyes, but this time, they weren't tears of grief or terror. They were tears of profound, long-overdue closure.

“Thank you, Dominic,” I whispered, turning my head to look at him.

He turned toward me as well, his dark eyes searching my face with an intensity that made my breath hitch.

“When I brought you onto that jet three weeks ago,” Dominic said slowly, choosing his words with deliberate care, “I told myself I was keeping you here because you were essential to saving my daughter. But the truth is... from the very first moment I saw you walk down that airplane aisle with your eyes blazing with grief and courage, I knew I would never let you go.”

My heart skipped a beat. “Dominic...”

“You don't have to answer me now,” he interrupted gently, reaching out to brush a stray lock of hair behind my ear. “You’ve lost too much, too fast. But I want you to know—this estate isn't a prison anymore, Elena. It’s a home. And whether you choose to stay as the mother of my child, or as my partner in everything that comes next... my world belongs to you now.”

I looked down at the coffee mug in my hands, then up at the man who had torn apart an empire just to keep us safe.

Three months ago, I had buried my family and believed my story was over. But sitting here in the golden morning light, with Sophie sleeping soundly in her crib and Dominic waiting patiently for my answer, I realized the universe hadn't ended my story—it had simply given me a new beginning, forged in fire, survival, and an unbreakable love.

I set the mug down on the table, reached out, and placed my hand over Dominic’s tattooed fingers.

A slow, brilliant smile broke across his stern face, lighting up his dark eyes with a warmth I knew belonged to me alone.

And as the snow outside began to melt under the rising sun, I finally let myself believe in tomorrow.
