Chapter 5 - The Trap is SprungThe storm outside reached blizzard proportions by the end of the month, howling through the pines like a pack of starving wolves.

Inside the estate, however, the atmosphere was deceptively quiet.

I had spent the last forty-eight hours cross-referencing Vance Sterling’s offshore shell companies with the security access logs of the compound. Every single attempt on Sophie’s life, every security leak, and every betrayal traced directly back to Vance and a faction of rogue enforcers planning a coup against Dominic.

I knew I had to tell Dominic immediately, but the timing was critical. Vance was scheduled to brief Dominic in the private study at midnight.

At 11:45 PM, I quietly stepped out of the nursery. The hallway was dimly lit by wall sconces. The two guards assigned to my door stood at attention, nodding respectfully as I approached.

“I need to speak with Mr. Hayes in his study,” I said, keeping my voice steady. “It’s about Sophie’s formula schedule.”

The head guard hesitated, pressing his earpiece. “Hold on, let me check with—'

“Let her enter,” a deep, commanding voice echoed from down the hallway.

Dominic stepped out from the shadows near the corner, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that told me he already knew why I was there. He had sensed the shift in the compound’s energy just as well as I had.

I followed him down the long corridor toward the heavy oak doors of the study. Inside, muffled voices could already be heard.

Vance Sterling was speaking.

“...the eastern warehouses are clear, Mr. Hayes. If we move the cargo tonight during the blizzard, federal agents won't interfere,” Vance was saying as Dominic silently pushed the heavy study door open just an inch.

We peered inside. Vance stood by the mahogany desk, flanked by two armed guards loyal to his faction.

Dominic didn't draw a weapon immediately. Instead, he pushed the door wide open, his heavy boots clicking loudly against the hardwood floor.

Vance spun around, his face draining of color in a fraction of a second. His hand twitched toward the holster beneath his suit jacket.

“Boss,” Vance stammered, forcing a tense, nervous smile. “You’re... you’re up late. We were just reviewing the logistics for the storm shipment.”

Dominic walked slowly toward the desk, his massive frame radiating an aura of lethal, controlled fury. He didn't look at Vance; instead, he tossed the encrypted flash drive onto the center of the mahogany wood with a sharp clatter.

“Logistics, Vance?” Dominic asked softly. “Or is that the encryption key for the offshore accounts you opened in the Cayman Islands using my late wife’s family trust?”

Vance’s eyes darted toward the door, where four of Dominic’s loyal enforcers had silently materialized behind me, blocking all exits.

“You’re listening to ghost stories, boss,” Vance spat, his bravado cracking as his hand finally whipped toward his gun.

He never cleared the holster.

With blinding speed, Dominic drew his sidearm and fired a single shot straight through Vance’s right shoulder.

A agonizing scream echoed off the stone walls as Vance collapsed backward onto the Persian rug, clutching his bleeding arm while his gun clattered across the floor.

The two rogue guards flanking him immediately raised their rifles, but before their fingers could even touch the triggers, Dominic’s loyal enforcers cut them down with precise, disciplined crossfire.

Smoke filled the air, thick with the smell of gunpowder and burning copper.

Vance writhed on the floor, gasping for breath, blood pooling rapidly across the expensive rug.

Dominic walked over, standing directly above the traitor, pressing the heavy rubber sole of his boot firmly against Vance’s uninjured shoulder, pinning him to the floor.

“You tried to poison my daughter,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a terrifying, dead calm whisper. “And you framed an innocent man for a murder you orchestrated.”

Vance choked out a bloody laugh, glaring up at Dominic with pure venom. “You think... you think killing me stops it? The council... the other families... they know I’m dead. They’ll tear this estate apart before dawn.”

Dominic didn't blink. He raised his pistol, aiming squarely between Vance’s eyes.

“Let them come,” Dominic whispered, pulling the trigger.
