Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the LedgerFor the next two weeks, my life inside the Hayes estate became a strange, surreal rhythm of survival, grief, and reluctant intimacy.

I spent most of my days in the east wing nursery with Sophie. Feeding her, rocking her to sleep, and watching her tiny features grow stronger and healthier under my care. She had Dominic’s dark hair and intense eyes, but when she smiled in her sleep, she possessed a quiet, peaceful grace that seemed entirely alien to the brutal world outside our windows.
Mrs. Gable treated me like royalty, bringing up fresh meals, organic teas, and books from Dominic’s private library.
Yet, I was acutely aware of the armed guards stationed outside my door twenty-four hours a day. I was a prisoner wrapped in silk.
Dominic visited us every evening at precisely seven o'clock. He would drop his suit jacket over the armchair, wash his hands in the adjoining bathroom, and quietly take Sophie from my arms. Watching the most feared crime lord in the Midwest cradle a nine-pound infant with such effortless, fierce tenderness never failed to twist my heart in knots.
One evening, after Sophie had fallen asleep in her crib, Dominic turned to me as I stood by the window watching the snow fall over the pines.
“You haven't touched the laptop I had placed in your study,” Dominic observed, leaning against the doorframe.
I turned around, crossing my arms. “I have no interest in your business ledgers, Dominic.”
“It’s not my business ledgers,” he replied, stepping closer. “It’s your husband’s encrypted hard drive. My tech team managed to recover the encrypted partition your husband backed up to a secure cloud server the night before he died. There are files there that implicate high-ranking members of my own syndicate working in cahoots with a rival faction.”
My breath hitched. I uncrossed my arms, stepping away from the window. “You decrypted his work?”
“I did,” Dominic said quietly. “And it proves two things. First, your husband was innocent—he was framed by a traitor inside my ranks. Second, the men who ordered his death are the exact same men who tried to poison my daughter.”
He reached into his pocket and handed me a small, encrypted flash drive.
“I want you to look at the financial routing numbers on sector four,” Dominic instructed. “Your background is in forensic accounting, Elena. Before you married, you worked for federal financial crimes units in Boston. You know how to read these paper trails better than any of my enforcers.”
I stared at the black drive in his palm. For three months, I had felt completely powerless—a victim of a cruel universe that stole my family without a warning. Now, the universe was handing me a weapon.
“If I help you find the traitor,” I whispered, looking up into his dark eyes, “what happens then?”
“Then we destroy them,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a lethal, ice-cold register. “And you get your definitive justice.”
That night, sitting at the mahogany desk in the corner of the nursery while Sophie slept peacefully in her crib, I plugged the drive into the secure laptop.
As the encrypted spreadsheets loaded onto the screen, glowing in the dark room, my fingers flew across the keyboard. Line by line, transaction by transaction, the hidden network of corruption revealed itself. Names, offshore bank accounts, shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands—and right at the center of the web sat a man whose name I recognized from the shipping manifests:
Vance Sterling.

Head of security operations for the Hayes syndicate. The very man who had greeted us on the tarmac on my first night in Chicago.
My blood ran cold. The traitor wasn't hiding in the shadows; he was standing right beside Dominic every single day.
