Chapter 5 - The Heir to the TrustBy evening, the corporate storm had passed, leaving Carter Global more secure and dominant than ever. With Sterling Technologies implicated in a massive federal fraud scandal, the board of directors unanimously reaffirmed Nathan’s leadership with a standing ovation, hastily discarding Margaret’s proxy signatures as fraudulent and coerced.

We returned to the Greenwich mansion late that night. But this time, the house felt different. The cold, sterile ghosts of elite judgment had been permanently swept out.

We stood in the expansive country kitchen, pouring two glasses of wine, when the front doorbell rang.

Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper—who had spent years participating in the mansion gossip before realizing which way the wind was blowing—rushed nervously to answer it, returning a moment later with a hesitant expression.

“Mrs. Carter... there are three young people at the door asking for you,” she murmured. “They said they’re your family.”

My face lit up instantly. “Let them in! Right now!”

A moment later, the kitchen doors swung open, and a chaotic wave of youthful energy flooded the room.

Johnny, nineteen and tall with our father’s sharp jawline; Paul, seventeen and furiously studying for college entrance exams; and Lily, fourteen with bright, inquisitive eyes and a sketchbook clutched tightly to her chest, burst into the room.

“Emily!” Lily shrieked, dropping her books and running straight into my arms, nearly tackling me to the floor.

I laughed, holding her tight, burying my face in her hair as tears of joy pricked my eyes. Johnny and Paul stepped up sheepishly, their hands shoved into their jacket pockets, looking around the palatial kitchen with wide, intimidated eyes.

“Is... is this really where you live now, Em?” Paul asked, whistling softly as he stared up at the copper pots hanging above the marble island. “It’s bigger than our entire high school.”

“It’s our home,” a deep, warm voice intervened.

Nathan walked forward from the pantry, holding a tray of warm pastries. He didn't look like an untouchable billionaire CEO; he looked like an older brother welcoming his family home. He set the tray down and extended his hand to Johnny.

“You must be Johnny,” Nathan said, his smile genuine and warm. “I’ve heard so much about you. Emily talked about your grades every single day.”

Johnny blinked, shaking Nathan’s hand firmly. “You... you’re Nathan Carter? The guy on the Forbes cover?”

“At your service,” Nathan chuckled, before turning to Paul and Lily. “And you two must be the brilliant minds I’ve been funding through college accounts. Welcome to your new home. There are no chores required, no curfews, and the pantry is stocked with whatever you want.”

Lily’s eyes went wide. “Even ice cream for breakfast?”

“Especially ice cream for breakfast,” Nathan agreed, winking at her.

As my brothers and sister scattered across the kitchen to raid the refrigerator and explore the house, Nathan stepped up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder.

“You never told me your family was so wonderful,” Nathan whispered softly in my ear.

“I didn't want anyone using them against me,” I admitted, leaning back into his embrace. “When you grow up with nothing, people try to take the only things that matter.”

“Well, nobody is taking anything from you ever again,” Nathan promised, pressing a tender kiss to my temple. “You sacrificed your youth to raise them, Emily. Now it’s time for you to finally be a sister, a daughter, and a queen.”
