Chapter 5 - The Arraignment and the Mask SlipsThree weeks after the night of the boiling water, I walked into the downtown federal courthouse under heavy armed security, wearing specialized compression garments over my healing scars and holding my head high with unyielding resolve.

When the prosecutor projected the autopsy reports of my unborn sons alongside the forensic chemical analysis of the prenatal vitamins Luke had personally handed me every morning, a collective gasp echoed through the courtroom gallery. Then, the prosecution called their surprise witness: Sarah, Luke’s former college lab partner who had survived his physical assaults six years prior and had gone into hiding under federal witness protection. Sarah took the stand, her voice steady and clear as she detailed how Luke had systematically poisoned her drinks and pushed her down a flight of stairs when she threatened to leave him, proving a clear, undeniable pattern of murderous behavior. Luke leaped to his feet in the courtroom, screaming obscenely at the judge and lunging toward the witness box before four federal marshals slammed him down onto the wooden bench, slapping heavy steel cuffs back onto his wrists as the judge banged the gavel repeatedly to restore order. The mask had slipped permanently, revealing the coward beneath.
