Chapter 1 - The Boiling Water and the Hospital RevealFor years, Luke had masterminded a campaign of calculated terror behind our locked front door, convincing both our families and our community that there was something inherently defective with my body whenever a pregnancy failed.

The doctor, however, did not flinch or accept his fabricated narrative. She lifted my medical chart and sharply noted that my burn patterns were utterly inconsistent with an accidental spill. Then, she dropped a bombshell that drained every drop of color from Luke’s face: my pregnancy records proved I was never infertile, and every single fetus I had lost had been a healthy, perfectly formed male. The sons Luke had spent years punishing me for failing to produce had actually been growing inside me all along, destroyed not by my body, but by the very man who claimed to want them. When the doctor asked me directly if it was an accident, Luke’s fingers clamped onto my hand in a familiar, threatening warning grip meant to silence me. But the years of fear broke instantly; I yanked my hand away and whispered the truth aloud: "He poured it on me." Luke lunged forward in a blind panic, his mask slipping completely as he hissed that I had nothing without him, no money, no phone, and no one left in the world. Believing he had successfully isolated me, he thought he was completely untouchable.
