Chapter 5 - The Flight HomeThe cabin door of the Sikorsky closed with a heavy, pressurized thud, shutting out the biting mountain wind and the lingering echoes of despair inside the Reynolds estate.

As the twin turbines whined back to full operational power, lifting the aircraft smoothly off the snowy lawn, I looked out the window. Down below, the massive stone mansion looked small, isolated against the towering majesty of the Rockies.
Inside the cabin, the heavy tension that had gripped us upon arrival completely evaporated.
— Mama, can we get hot chocolate at the airport in Austin? — Sophia asked eagerly, pressing her face back against the glass as the ground fell away beneath us.
— Double marshmallows, too! — Ethan chimed in, holding up two fingers.
I laughed, the sound warm and genuine, and reached across the aisle to squeeze Noah’s hand.
— Absolutely, darlings. Double marshmallows for everyone, — I promised.
As the helicopter banked south toward the Texas border, my phone buzzed continuously against my thigh. Text messages, missed calls, and urgent voicemail notifications flashed across the screen in rapid succession.
Marcus: “Kesha, please pick up. We can work out joint custody, we can fix this, please don't let Uncle Richard ruin me.”
Marcus: “Kesha, I’m begging you.”
Patricia: “You cold-hearted monster, think of your children growing up without a father!”
I didn't even bother opening them. With a single practiced swipe, I selected all, blocked both numbers permanently, and tossed the phone into my designer leather handbag.
They no longer existed in my calculations.
Across the aisle, Noah looked up at me with those piercing gray eyes—eyes that reminded me so much of the man he shared DNA with, yet carried none of his cowardice.
— Are we ever going back to see that man, Mama? — Noah asked softly, his voice wise beyond his eight years.
I smiled, wrapping my arm around his shoulders and pulling him close against my side.
— No, sweet boy. You never have to see him again. You have everything you will ever need right here.
He nodded happily, leaning his head against my shoulder as he watched the fluffy white clouds drift past our window.
Looking out over the endless horizon of the sky as we sped toward home, a profound sense of peace washed over my soul.
Eight years ago, I had sat in a cold, sterile doctor’s office in Austin, weeping over a positive pregnancy test while the man I loved packed his bags and ran away in terror. I had believed my life was over, that my dreams had been shattered, and that I was destined to struggle in the shadows of someone else’s convenience.
Instead, the universe had handed me the greatest gift of my life.
It wasn't easy. There were sleepless nights, endless deadlines, terrifying financial risks, and moments of crushing loneliness where I wondered if I could carry the weight alone. But every hurdle I cleared had forged me into a woman of unshakeable strength.

I hadn't just survived. I had triumphed.
And today, standing amidst the ruins of Marcus’s arrogant world, I had delivered the ultimate final audit.
