Chapter 2 - The Shattered IllusionThe silence inside the grand Boulder foyer was so absolute you could hear the faint crackle of burning logs in the massive stone fireplace across the room.

Patricia Reynolds staggered backward, her back colliding against an antique mahogany console table, causing a decorative silver bowl to rattle loudly. Her mouth opened and closed like a landed fish.

— K-Kesha? — Patricia stammered, her voice pitching upward into an ugly, shrill screech. — What is the meaning of this sick joke? What are these children doing here?!

Before I could answer, Marcus finally found his voice, though it sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement.

— Kesha... — he choked out, taking an involuntary step forward before freezing as if he had hit an invisible electric fence. His gaze darted frantically from my face to the four identical sets of gray eyes staring back at him. — This... this isn't possible. You said... you told me—

— I didn't tell you anything, Marcus, — I interrupted smoothly, stepping forward and stripping off my leather gloves. — You didn't give me the chance. Eight years ago, when I told you I was pregnant, you packed a bag, screamed that I was trying to trap you, filed for a unilateral default divorce, changed your phone number, and blocked my email before I could even process the ultrasound.

Across the room, several extended family members—aunts, uncles, and cousins who had eagerly participated in my social ostracization years ago—began shifting uncomfortably, murmuring among themselves.

The blonde fiancée, whose name tag at the dinner party later revealed her to be Chloe Vance, stepped in front of Marcus, her face flushed with humiliation and fury.

— Marcus! What is she talking about?! — Chloe demanded, waving her diamond ringed hand toward my children. — Who are these brats? Are you telling me you have a secret family?!

— No! Of course not! — Marcus protested frantically, his hands waving in the air as panic seized him. He turned his wide, terrified eyes back to me. — Kesha, please. This has to be some kind of setup. DNA tests—we need DNA tests! They could be anyone’s—!

— DNA tests? — I laughed, a sharp, cold sound that made Marcus flinch. — Feel free to order all the swabs you want, Marcus. But I promise you, every single one of them has your stubborn jaw, your rare blood type, and your exact cowlick on the crown of their heads. You abandoned quadruplets because you were too cowardly to face diaper duty and corporate audits at the same time.

Noah, who had inherited my calm intelligence mixed with his father’s sharp observational skills, looked up at Marcus with wide, innocent eyes.

— Are you the man who didn't want us? — Noah asked politely, tilting his head.

The words struck Marcus like a physical blow to the chest. He staggered back another step, colliding with the Christmas tree, sending silver ornaments shivering against its pine boughs.

Patricia, recovering a fraction of her formidable snobbery, pushed past Chloe and pointed a shaking finger at me.

— You venomous little liar! — Patricia shrieked, her face turning crimson. — You planned this! You waited eight years just to march in here and humiliate my son on Christmas Day! You think you can trap us with a pack of bastards—!

— Watch your tongue, Patricia, — I said, my voice dropping an octave into a register so chilling that the older woman actually snapped her mouth shut. — These children are legitimate, educated, loved, and infinitely more successful than your son will ever be. And as for trapping you? I didn't want your money, your name, or your charity eight years ago, and I certainly don't want it now. I came here today because Marcus invited me to bury the hatchet. So, I brought the entire forest.

Chloe let out a choked gasp, glaring daggers at Marcus. — You invited her here?! While you proposed to me last month, you invited your ex-wife to a family holiday dinner?!

— Chloe, honey, listen to me, I didn't know—! Marcus pleaded, reaching out to grab her arm, but she violently shook him off.

— Don't touch me! You lied to me about your past! You told me she had an abortion and walked out of your life forever!

She ripped the diamond engagement ring off her finger, hurled it directly into Marcus’s chest, and stormed toward the front door, slamming it so hard the entire timber-framed house vibrated.

May you like

The silence rushed back in, heavier and more suffocating than before.

Marcus stood amidst the falling pine needles, ruined and exposed, staring at the woman and children he had tried to erase, realizing that his meticulously curated life had just burned to the ground in less than five minutes.
