Chapter 7 - A New HorizonThree weeks later, the air in the Pennsylvania mountains was crisp, smelling of pine smoke and wet autumn leaves.

Jillian stood on the wooden porch of her mother’s farmhouse, wrapped in a heavy flannel shirt, watching the golden sunlight filter through the changing canopy of maple trees.
Down by the barn, Cody sat on an old wooden stool with a sketchpad resting on his knees, completely absorbed in drawing a red-tailed hawk circling above the pasture. His shoulders were relaxed. The hunted, paranoid look that had haunted his eyes for weeks was entirely gone.
A sleek black car crunched up the gravel driveway.
Jillian tensed instinctively, her hand tightening on the porch railing. But as the car door opened, it wasn't a Bannon enforcer who stepped out.
It was Emmett Carbone.
He wore his familiar charcoal overcoat, walking slowly up the stone steps with his silver-topped cane. He stopped a few feet away, offering her a respectful, gentle nod.
"Mr. Carbone," Jillian said, surprised. "What are you doing here?"
"I was passing through the state on business," Emmett said smoothly. "And I wanted to check on our artist."
Jillian looked toward the barn, watching Cody glance up, wave shyly at Emmett, and return to his drawing.
"The federal indictments were signed yesterday," Emmett continued, leaning against the railing. "Malcolm will spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security facility. Patrick has filed for a clean divorce and is cooperating with the prosecution in exchange for witness protection immunity. He’s staying out West, trying to rebuild his life from scratch."
Jillian let out a long, slow breath she felt she had been holding for twenty years. "And the Carbones?"
"We are stepping out of the shadows," Emmett said quietly. "We are liquidating our remaining logistics assets and transitioning entirely into legitimate maritime shipping and commercial real estate. No more guns. No more blood. Just business."
He looked at Jillian, his sharp eyes softening. "You saved your son, Jillian. And in doing so, you gave my family—and yours—a chance to finally start over."
May you like
Jillian smiled, the last remnants of the terror from that rainy October night finally melting away in the autumn sun. She stepped off the porch and walked with Emmett toward the barn, where Cody was waiting.
For the first time in her life, the road ahead was completely open, and the ghosts of the past were finally laid to rest.
