Chapter 2 - The House of EchoesThe Carbone safehouse was not a dungeon or a fortified bunker. It was a weather-beaten shingle cottage perched on a jagged cliff overlooking Narragansett Bay, surrounded by tall marsh grass and the constant, rhythmic pounding of dark ocean waves.

When Frank helped Jillian out of the car, the biting salt air hit her face like ice. She limped across the porch, wincing as her bandaged foot protested every step. Dr. Aris—a quiet, gray-haired man who looked like a retired biology teacher rather than a syndicate surgeon—met them at the door with a metal case.
An hour later, her foot cleaned, stitched, and wrapped in sterile gauze, Jillian sat wrapped in a thick wool blanket by a stone fireplace. A cup of hot chamomile tea sat untouched between her hands.
Emmett stood by the window, watching the distant sweep of the lighthouse beam slice through the fog.
"You haven't eaten," Emmett noted without turning around.
"I'm not hungry."
"Eat the soup Frank brought. You'll need your strength. Tomorrow, we bring your boy here."
Jillian looked up sharply. "Bring Cody here? Are you insane? That's walking right into Malcolm's crosshairs. If Malcolm finds out Cody is with the Carbones, he'll level this entire coast to get him back."
"Malcolm thinks Cody is heading west toward Pennsylvania," Emmett said calmly, turning to face her. "He has his men staked out on the I-95 corridor and the state line. He won't expect the boy to be brought directly into the lion's den—or rather, the rival's den."
"I won't risk my son's life to be a pawn in your war with Malcolm," Jillian said, her voice rising with desperate fury. "You and Malcolm have been circling each other like starving dogs for decades. I don't care about your territory, your docks, or your pride! I care about my sixteen-year-old boy who just wants to go to art school!"
Emmett walked slowly across the room, his footsteps muffled by the thick braided rug. He stopped a few feet away from her chair, looking down with an expression that was surprisingly gentle.
"Jillian. Look at me."
She forced herself to meet his eyes.
"Do you think I wanted this life?" Emmett asked quietly. "My father died on the docks of South Providence when I was ten years old, killed because he refused to pay protection to Malcolm's father. I spent forty years building the Carbone name not out of greed, but out of survival. I built a shield so thick that no Bannon could ever crush my family again."
He leaned against the mantelpiece. "Malcolm is old. And when aging men like him realize their empire is slipping through their fingers, they become desperate. Shawn tried to walk away from it all. He tried to sell his shares, clean his hands, and build a legitimate life with his young wife and child. And how did Malcolm reward him? By ensuring Shawn’s car brakes failed on Route 4."
Jillian gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "That wasn't an accident...?"
"Shawn knew too much," Emmett said grimly. "And now Malcolm wants Cody because Cody has Shawn's mind. He wants to groom your son to take Shawn's place—not as an artist, but as a cold, calculating financial shield for illegal arms and drug money. If you don't fight back now, Malcolm will consume your boy until there is nothing left of him."
The words echoed in Jillian's mind, chilling her to the bone. She thought back to the kitchen table twelve days ago—Cody sitting there with his sketchpad, drawing a lonely man under a bus shelter, completely unaware that his entire world was about to collapse.
"What do we do?" Jillian whispered.
Emmett straightened up. "First, we get Cody safely across state lines. But not to Pennsylvania. Not yet. We bring him here, where my security teams can protect him. Second, we take Shawn's thumb drive and we drop it directly onto the desk of the United States Attorney in Boston."
Jillian stared at him. "Federal indictment?"
"It’s the only way to decapitate the Bannon syndicate permanently," Emmett said. "If we fight them with guns, hundreds of people die in the streets. If we fight them with federal law enforcement backed by indisputable evidence, Malcolm goes to federal prison for the rest of his natural life, and your family is finally free."
Before Jillian could answer, the secure satellite phone on the side table buzzed.

Frank picked it up, listened for three seconds, and handed it to Emmett with a grim face. "It's our scout in West Greenwich. The Bannons just intercepted a vehicle matching your car on Route 2. They know you left the estate with a woman."
Emmett took the phone, his eyes locking onto Jillian. "They're hunting us."
