Chapter 4 - The Ambush at the ClinicThe months passed in a blur of legal victories and physical healing. My foot was slowly recovering, transitioning from a heavy cast to a walking boot. The baby was growing strong, and with every passing week, the shadow of the Vance family grew smaller in my rearview mirror.

Liam was still locked away, awaiting trial. But Eleanor was out on bail for her accessory charges, and desperation makes a wounded animal wildly unpredictable.
I was eight months pregnant, waddling heavily out of my obstetrician’s clinic with Sarah by my side. The sun was shining, and we were laughing about the baby registry.
"I'll go pull the car around," Sarah said, pointing to the far side of the parking garage. "Stay here by the security desk."
"I'll be fine," I smiled, leaning against a concrete pillar near the exit.
But as Sarah disappeared around the corner, a sleek black town car screeched to a halt right in front of me. The back door flew open, and before I could react, a pair of strong hands grabbed my arms, attempting to yank me into the vehicle.
It was a private security thug, hired by Eleanor, who was sitting in the back seat with wild, bloodshot eyes.
"Get her in! Get her in right now!" Eleanor shrieked. "We're taking her to a private clinic! She is not having that baby in this state!"
"Let go of me!" I screamed, thrashing my weight backward. The man was strong, but he underestimated the primal, violent strength of a mother protecting her unborn child.
Using my good foot, I launched a brutal kick directly into the man’s knee. He buckled with a grunt of pain.
Instead of running, I reached into my purse, pulled out the heavy canister of police-grade pepper spray I had carried every day since the hospital, and discharged it directly into his face. He screamed, collapsing onto the concrete.
Eleanor lunged out of the car, raising her hand to slap me.
But I wasn't the broken, terrified girl chained to an iron doorframe anymore.
Before her hand could make contact, I caught her wrist mid-air. I twisted it sharply, watching her eyes widen in shock as she gasped in pain.
"You touch me again," I snarled, stepping into her personal space until she could feel the heat of my breath, "and I won't just ruin your reputation. I will break your bones exactly like your monster of a son broke mine."
Sirens wailed in the distance. Sarah had seen the commotion and flagged down a passing patrol car.

Eleanor tried to scramble back into her town car, but the police cruisers boxed her in. As the officers dragged the screaming, flailing matriarch out of the car and slammed her onto the hood to cuff her, I stood tall, adjusting my maternity coat.
She was arrested for attempted kidnapping and assault. The Vance family wasn't just ruined anymore. They were eradicated.
