Chapter 1 - The Hospital SiegeThe footsteps in the corridor grew louder, heavy and frantic. Every rhythmic thud against the linoleum floor sent a violent spike of adrenaline through my veins. My heart monitor began to beep faster, betraying the sheer terror radiating through my pregnant body.

"Sarah, block the door," I choked out, my voice trembling but laced with a newfound, desperate steel.
My sister didn’t hesitate. She dragged the heavy armchair across the room, wedging it tightly under the door handle just as a violent fist pounded against the wood.
"Clara! Open the door!" Liam’s muffled voice bled through the barrier. It wasn't the voice of a man concerned for his pregnant wife. It was the furious, entitled bark of a man who realized he was losing control of his favorite victim. "I know you're in there! Tell Sarah to get out. We are going home, right now!"
I looked down at my mangled foot. The bandages were thick, but the deep purple and black bruising crept up my ankle, a sickening reminder of the cold iron doorframe and the heavy steel hammer. A phantom pain shot up my leg, but this time, it didn't paralyze me. It fueled me.
"I said open the damn door!" Liam roared, his weight slamming against the wood. The door shuddered, but Sarah’s makeshift barricade held.
"He's crazy," Sarah whispered, her eyes wide as she pulled out her phone and dialed 911. "I'm calling the police. I don't care what he says anymore."
"Do it," I replied, my hands resting protectively over my swollen stomach. "Tell them my abuser is trying to break into my hospital room."
Outside, the commotion escalated. I heard the sharp, authoritative voices of the hospital security team.
"Sir, you need to step back from the door immediately!" a guard shouted.
"That is my wife in there! I have a right to see her!" Liam yelled back, playing the part of the outraged, worried husband. "She's hysterical! She had an accident at home and she's not thinking clearly. Let me in!"
"No!" I screamed, finding a volume I didn't know I possessed. "He did this to me! Do not let him in!"
There was a sudden scuffle outside. The sound of bodies hitting the drywall. By the time the local police arrived minutes later, Liam was in handcuffs in the hallway. Through the crack in the door, after the police coaxed Sarah to move the chair, I saw him.
His eyes met mine. The charming mask he wore for the world had slipped completely. His face was twisted in pure, unadulterated venom.
"You're going to regret this, Clara," he hissed as the officers dragged him away. "My mother is going to make sure you have nothing left. You'll lose the baby. You'll lose everything."
I didn't flinch. I stared right back at him, my chin held high. "I've already lost everything that doesn't matter," I whispered.

As the police entered my room to take my official statement, Sarah handed them her phone. The video played—my screams, his laughter, the sickening crunch of bone. The lead detective’s face turned white.
The siege at the hospital was over. But the war for my life had just begun.
