Chapter 7 - A New FoundationThree months later, the autumn chill had given way to the crisp, bright sunshine of late November.

The Atlanta estate, once a cold, oppressive mausoleum ruled by suspicion and greed, was now bathed in light and quiet warmth. Douglas and Gertrude were awaiting trial in a federal detention center, while Evelyn Corbin, having realized the full extent of her younger son's betrayal, had quietly retreated to a peaceful wellness retreat in Switzerland, leaving the estate entirely in Garrett’s hands.
In the sunlit master kitchen, the air was thick with the rich, comforting scent of vanilla, melted butter, and freshly baked apple cinnamon tarts.
Rebecca stood by the marble island, wearing a light blue apron, dusting a final layer of powdered sugar over a warm pastry.
Behind her, the heavy oak door clicked open.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her flush against a solid, comforting chest. A heavy, warm chin rested gently on her shoulder.
"If you keep baking like this," Garrett’s deep, rumbling voice whispered softly against her ear, "the entire executive board of ApexBio is going to move into our kitchen permanently."
Rebecca smiled, leaning back into his embrace and resting her hands over his forearms. He was fully recovered—no limping, no braces, no shadows of the wheelchair that had once held him captive.
"Let them move in," Rebecca laughed softly, turning around in his arms to face him. "As long as they understand I'm the one running this house now."
Garrett smiled—a warm, genuine smile that reached his dark eyes, erasing every trace of the cold, guarded isolation he had worn like armor when they first met.
"You run everything that matters, Rebecca," he murmured, his voice dropping into a low, tender register.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-covered box. He didn't drop to one knee—he didn't need to. He stood tall, steady, and completely unshakeable, holding her future in the palm of his hand.
When he popped the lid open, a brilliant, flawless diamond ring caught the morning sunlight, flashing like a star against the velvet lining.
"When I met you," Garrett said quietly, his eyes locked onto hers with absolute devotion, "I thought I was hiring a caregiver to help me survive my own family. I didn't know I was hiring the woman who would save my life, rebuild my empire, and teach me how to trust again."
Tears welled in Rebecca’s eyes, but this time, they weren't tears of grief or betrayal. They were tears of profound, overwhelming release.
She thought back to that miserable night in San Diego when her husband had walked out, when her mother-in-law had sneered that a woman alone was worth nothing, when she had packed two suitcases and stepped out into a cold, terrifying unknown.
How wrong they had been.
She hadn't been worthless. She had simply been planting her roots in barren soil.
"Yes," Rebecca whispered, a radiant smile breaking across her face as Garrett slid the ring onto her finger. "Yes, absolutely."

Garrett pulled her close, lifting her slightly off her feet as his lips met hers in a deep, passionate, unbreakable kiss.
Outside the kitchen window, the golden morning sunlight flooded across the rolling green lawns of the estate, illuminating a future built not on secrets and fear, but on strength, loyalty, and a love that could weather any storm.
