Chapter 6 - The Resurrection at ApexBioThe glass-and-steel headquarters of ApexBio Solutions loomed against the gray Atlanta skyline like a monument to modern corporate power.

Inside the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor, the atmosphere was thick with tension, expensive cologne, and quiet anticipation.

Thirteen members of the board of directors sat around the massive polished obsidian conference table. At the head of the table sat Douglas Corbin, impeccably tailored in a bespoke navy suit, leaning back in his leather chair with the relaxed, effortless posture of a man who had already won the war.

To his right sat Gertrude, wearing a sharp black Chanel blazer, quietly reviewing the final vote tallies on a gold-plated tablet.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Douglas began, his voice smooth, resonant, and dripping with theatrical humility as he cleared his throat. "We are here today for a solemn and necessary transition of leadership. As you all know, my brother Garrett’s tragic accident eight months ago robbed our company of its chief visionary. While we have all prayed for a miraculous recovery, Dr. Evans' latest medical assessments confirm that Garrett’s neurological recovery has permanently plateaued. He remains wheelchair-bound, cognitively fatigued, and legally unfit to manage his fiduciary duties."

He paused, letting the heavy silence settle over the room before delivering the final blow.

"In accordance with our corporate charter and our father's family trust provisions, I am formally moving that the board vote to transition my interim CEO status into a permanent appointment, effective immediately, alongside a restructuring of the voting shares to ensure corporate stability."

A murmur rippled through the board members. Several older directors, loyal to the Corbin family name, nodded slowly in agreement. Others, who owed their positions to Douglas’s quiet political maneuvering, reached for their voting pads without hesitation.

"Are there any comments or objections before we call the vote?" Douglas asked, looking around the table with a triumphant, condescending smirk.

"I have an objection."

The heavy oak doors at the back of the boardroom clicked open.

The low, baritone voice rolled across the forty-second floor with the effortless authority of a thunderclap.

Douglas froze. His hand, resting on the obsidian table, twitched violently, spilling a few drops of water from his crystal glass.

Every head in the boardroom whipped around toward the entrance.

Stepping through the double doors was Garrett Corbin.

He wasn't in a wheelchair.

He wore a sharply tailored charcoal suit that fit his broad shoulders to absolute perfection. His posture was military-straight, his stride unassisted, steady, and deliberate. Each step he took across the thick wool carpet echoed like a gunshot in the silent room.

Behind him walked Rebecca Miller, carrying a sleek leather briefcase, her expression calm, collected, and utterly lethal.

For three full seconds, absolute, paralyzed silence gripped the boardroom.

Douglas looked as though he had just seen a ghost crawled straight out of a crypt. His face drained of all color, his lips parting in a silent, horrified gasp. Gertrude dropped her gold tablet onto the table with a sharp clatter, her eyes bulging in sheer terror.

"G-Garrett?" Douglas stammered, his voice cracking like a terrified schoolboy as he half-stood from his chair. "How... how are you... you're paralyzed. Dr. Evans' reports said—"

"Dr. Evans' reports were bought and paid for with twenty thousand dollars a month in embezzled corporate funds," Garrett interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like a razor blade.

Garrett walked straight down the center aisle of the boardroom, his dark eyes locked onto his brother with a chilling, predatory focus. He reached the head of the table, planted both hands firmly on the obsidian surface, and leaned down so he was staring directly into Douglas’s terrified face.

"Surprise, brother," Garrett whispered softly. "I'm back from the dead."

Douglas scrambled backward, his chair scraping loudly against the floor. "This is a stunt! He's unstable! Security! Get him out of here—"

"Quiet, Douglas," Garrett barked, the sheer thunder of his command freezing every security guard outside the glass doors in their tracks.

Garrett straightened up and gestured to Rebecca.

Rebecca stepped forward, unzipped the leather briefcase, and placed thick manila folders directly in front of the three senior board members nearest to her.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the board," Rebecca said, her voice clear, professional, and ringing with absolute authority. "Inside those folders, you will find certified copies of Dr. Evans' wire transfer receipts routed through a Cayman Islands shell company, physical logs of corporate funds diverted to personal accounts under Gertrude Corbin's maiden name, and independent neurological evaluations proving that Mr. Corbin’s physical recovery has been artificially suppressed by his own family for the sole purpose of executing a hostile corporate takeover."

Total chaos erupted in the boardroom.

Directors stood up from their chairs, shouting over one another, flipping through the financial documents in horror. The senior board chairman, a retired federal judge named Arthur Vance, slammed his hand down on the table.

"Order! Order in this room!" Judge Vance demanded, adjusting his glasses as he stared at the financial printouts. He looked up at Garrett, then sideways at Douglas, whose face was now the color of wet chalk. "Mr. Corbin... are these allegations verified?"

"Every single word, Judge Vance," Garrett said calmly, sliding his hands into the pockets of his tailored trousers. "My brother and his wife conspired to commit medical fraud, financial embezzlement, and corporate conspiracy. Federal marshals have already been briefed, and freeze orders have been placed on all personal accounts linked to the shell companies."

Douglas turned violently toward Gertrude, his voice pitching into a hysterical shriek. "You said she was on our side! You said the new nurse was loyal!"

Gertrude burst into tears, covering her face with her hands as the board members backed away from them as if they carried a plague.

Judge Vance stood up slowly, looking around the room with a grim, unyielding expression.

"In light of the overwhelming evidence presented today," Judge Vance announced, his voice echoing across the silent boardroom, "I move that we immediately strip Douglas Corbin of all executive authority, terminate his employment with ApexBio Solutions, and refer this entire matter to the United States Attorney’s office for immediate criminal indictment."

He raised his gavel.

Bam.

"All in favor?"

Every single hand around the obsidian table shot into the air.

Douglas slumped backward into his chair, defeated, broken, and utterly ruined, while Gertrude sobbed uncontrollably beside him.

Garrett didn't look at them. He stood tall, steady, and immovable at the head of the table, a titan reclaiming his empire.

Then, he turned his head slightly, locking his dark eyes onto Rebecca, who stood quietly by the door with a small, triumphant smile on her face.

The game was over. They had won.
