Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost TrustBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor executive command suite at The Russo Tower overlooking Lake Michigan was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security operators in dark suits guarded every corridor. Inside, premature baby Leo was fast asleep in a state-of-the-art portable incubator, monitored by two private neonatal nurses whom I oversaw directly.
Michael sat in a velvet armchair across the room, his face bandaged, drinking a mug of hot tea while private medical staff treated his cracked ribs. Marcus Vance’s tactical team had executed a flawless, silent strike on the Chicago River warehouse forty minutes earlier, rescuing my brother and recovering the leather ledger without a single civilian casualty.
In the center of the executive study, sitting at the massive black granite conference table, were Daniel, Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton, and two federal forensic accounting experts.
Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers and wiretap transcripts flat onto the table before Daniel and me:
"Daniel, Rachel," Bridget spoke crisp and fast, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit recovered from Michael’s ledger is complete."
Daniel leaned against the edge of the granite table, his dark hair disheveled, his broad shoulders squared, his storm-gray eyes locked onto mine. "Explain it to her, Bridget."
Bridget tapped the digital screens:
THE EIGHTY-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Proof that Julian Russo systematically diverted $80 million from the Russo Maritime Freight Trust over three years into shell accounts in Panama.
THE HOMICIDE DOSSIER: Intercepted wiretaps capturing Julian Russo paying two hitmen $2 million to orchestrate the ambush on Camille Russo's SUV to suppress her audit reports.
THE SOVEREIGN TRUST: Certified probate documents confirming infant Leo Daniel Russo as sole fifty-one percent common equity holder over the entire Russo Logistics Network upon his birth.
My hands tightened around my coffee cup until my knuckles turned white.
"They murdered your wife, tried to frame my brother, and left your premature son crying in an incubator for fourteen days..." I rasped out, every word falling like an iron block into the silent room. "All to steal an empire."

Daniel walked across the room, dropping flat onto one knee in front of my chair. The feared billionaire who commanded half of Chicago’s commercial economy reached out, taking my hands into his broad, warm palms, pressing his lips gently against my fingers.
"They tried to tear our lives apart, Rachel," Daniel promised, his gray eyes flashing with an cold, terrifying fire. "Tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM, the board meets to ratify the maritime proxies. Tomorrow... we destroy Julian Russo forever."
